drlovegun
I'm getting a vibration in the steering wheel once I get above 60 mph. Stops at around 65 and comes back around 72. The vibration is also in the steering wheel when I brake at highway speeds. Not in the pedal so the brakes are fine, I only have 11K miles anyway. Any thoughts as to my mystery vibration? 0201212
Wheel balance is the first thing I would check.
jnf
+1. Especially with the variation related to speed. Quick trip to Discount Tire should solve the problem.
drlovegun
Can't believe I didn't think of that. Would that attribute to the braking vibration in the wheel too?
2007tungstenGT500
i have that problem in another vehicle that only occurs when i brake. i attributed it to a warped rotor, but i recently read an article that dispelled that as a myth. apparently, brake pad material can build up unevenly on the rotor and cause that behavior
barspen
Had the exact same issue. Took my car into the Ford shop today and they did a Road Force balance for $ 70 ($99-coupon-miltary discount). Drives much better now, but haven't been on the highway long enough to know if the steering wobble is gone. FWIW, I dinged up the rim heading into a roundabout a few years ago and apparently is changed the shape of the rim on the inside. The service rep said it will never balance out correctly unless I get a new rim. Maybe Santa will bring some new CS1's this Dec :happy feet:
54First
Maybe the blankety-blank TPMS sensor is wandering around. Steve
drlovegun
Ok, update. I had the car aligned (only one tire a tiny bit off) and all 4 wheels speed-balanced. The issue persists. Where do I look next?
ViperNC
Is the vibration constant or does it go away after 20+ miles? If your car sits for long periods of time, you can develop a temporary flat spot on the tires which will eventually round out when the car gets driven. Softer compound tires are usually susceptible to this when they sit. If not, you may have an issue with the tire itself or possibly somewhere in the suspension. Secondo
Stock wheels/tires or aftermarket?
ViperNC
Stock wheels/tires or aftermarket? Good point.... the wheel may not be true. I had an issue with mine and they were rebuilt. No further issues.
