skiph
I'm seriously bummed that my Toyota 4-runner is not rated for towing my Shelby So looks like it's time to get a new SUV. As I'm not planning on buying a trailer, have folks used the U-Haul Auto Transport Trailer to tow their Shelby? - http://www.uhaul.com/Reservations/EquipmentDetail.aspx?model=AT As soon as I get an SUV that can tow my '08 with that trailer, looks like how low the splitter is in the front is going to require some care getting on & off the trailer, and to drive the front wheels up onto a length of 2x12 to lift it up over the front wheel stops. Just wondering if folks have used that trailer, any gotchas, and what you are towing with (the U-Haul site is pretty picky about what SUVs will "work" with that trailer). Thanks all! stngfever
Here's 07SGT5529 on a Uhaul trailer: Uhaul shows how to load "low clearance" vehicles: http://www.uhaul.com/Articles/Tips/118/Transporting-vehicles-with-low-ground-clearance Here's what I did, (3) 2x8x8, cut 2 of them to 6foot length, cut 1 in half. This provided me with a 6 foot, 4 foot and 2 foot 2x8's for each ramp. I placed these as step ups under the ramps as depicted from uhaul. I also cut some 3/4 inch plywood the size of front tire section within front of trailer. I also removed the 2 front wheel stops (these are attached with 2 bolts each). All of this was neccesary to provide enough clearance for a Shelby GT.
skiph
Many thank! Yea, I saw that link for low clearance vehicles. But nothing better then hearing from someone who has done it. Wondering what you were towing it with and what points under the Shelby you used to secure it to the trailer.
stngfever
Wondering what you were towing it with and what points under the Shelby you used to secure it to the trailer. A friends F-250 was used for pulling. U-haul is strict on which tow vehicles they will allow for pulling (i.e. no explorers). The front tire straps provided with these trailers holds the front tires and work Excellent. In the rear, we used a ratchet strap around the rear axle (primarily for added security). twobjshelbys
I towed my 08 sgt on a uha up. You do need the extra 2x8 or 2x10 two high approach ramps. I did not need to raise the front ones to clear the front chin splitter. Same with the cobra. I'll be doing a trial run on the ford gt this summer some time

Cobramach1
Everyone else has already posted good tips for loading. I don't have anything to add to that, but I will say that for a bumper trailer the u-haul trailer pulls very nicely. It's a well made and designed trailer. It's crazy how particular they are about the vehicle pulling them. They asked me a bunch of questions even after I told them I was pulling it with a F-250! Personally, I prefer goose neck trailers because they pull easy and you never get the swaying action you do with bumper trailers if they are not loaded properly. BAD SNAKE
I towed my GT500 from Houston to Tacoma using the U-haul trailer and it worked great! Yes you will need a 3' 2x material under the front tires and a couple under the ramps to load and unload the car. The wheel cover on the trailer folds down, don't open the car door or you'll scrape the wheel cover on the trailer. One other thing.......Don't lock the car, it will engage the alarm and it will go off when towing..........
skiph
Thank all! Yea, I did notice that trucks/SUVs that I would have thought could tow the Shelby+trailer no-problem, came up as "not recommended". Wishing there was a way to just list all the trucks/SUVs that U-Haul will let you tow with in one list other than the try them one at a time approach.
