DubbsFaris
This potentially belongs in the mod section, but I wanted to post this here because I dont want confusion with the earlier models. I spoke with my detailer, and he explained to me that there are a TON of patterns cut for the 13, 14, and wants me to come by to pick out which ones to get. Has anyone got the clearbra for their cars? Which body panels did you cover? Im planning whole hood, front fenders, front cowling, rocker panels and maybe the leading edge of the roofline. This is so I no longer have to worry about taping the car for track events and rock chips are soooo bad in Texas with all the heavy commercial oil and gas traffic we have now. Doing this and tinting windows and getting the Optiguard as it is fantastic on my SHO and Raptor. Any feedback guys and girls?
glroy
Yes on the around the windshield. Do not for get about the insides of the wheels rockers. I did the rockers up to the side stripes on the doors . also the quarters behind the rear wheels.mirror covers
DubbsFaris
Well, Im thinking of doing the entire car now. I mean, why not, right?
MJN
I did what I believe is the standard specially after getting a rock chip on my A-Pillar. Front bumper, Hood up to the vent, front part of fenders, A-pillar, leading edge of roof, rockers including behind rear wheel, mirrors, and door edges. DubbsFaris
What if it didnt cost you any extra to do the whole car?
glroy
What if it didnt cost you any extra to do the whole car? or you could just put it in a bubble and look at it parked Then there is my 07 with more white than black showing on the front bumper LOL
DubbsFaris
LOL Exactly my reason for doing this Glen. I got tired of seeing the rock chips peppering the front of my other Shelbys. And then there is Terlingua- my 2008 had DENTS in the front bumper from bug impacts. (Im not kidding)
MJN
Holy crap what kind of bugs you have over there lol!
DubbsFaris
They say everything is bigger in Texas. LOL Well, thats not the reason. The reason is there was a Bullrun portion of that particular event that had us driving in excess of 150 mph for VERY long stretches of road. Now that CS has passed and Amy Boylan is no longer Prez of SA, I feel a little more comfortable talking about it. It is something that you will probably never again see in a Shelby event of any kind. But what we did with our cars on that trip bordered stupid, amazing, and downright ballsy all at the same time. And damn near cost one of our guys his life. (he wont be driving a stick again competitively) Its hard to believe, but my front license plate looks like it was shot with an automatic BB gun. The front bumpers paint held up, but the plastic had indentions all over it, and there were many many broken windshields.
Hopsgt500
I had the front done, mirrors, A pillars, front part of the roof and rockers. It is definitely worth it and it makes driving so much more enjoyable since you don't have to worry about bugs or rock chips. Just one thing, the vinyl will make low gloss stripes gloss stripes. NordicShelby
I have the clear bra on my SGT and it cost $1,000 to do the front and the A pillars. I felt it was too expensive and the rock chips simply chip up the bra so it looks like crap anyways. It would have cost about the same to just have repainted. I know becuase after Terlingua 08 I had the entire front of my car repainted. If I could go back in time I would have just left the front end exactly the way it was after Terlingua and not payed to get it painted or a clear bra. The battle scars would have been cooler than a nice pristine paint job. How much to do the entire car? Personally I would not get the clear bra again. I didn't have one put on the BOSS. Big mistake the paint is never the same as factory and it gets stone chips worse than factory paint. The bugs have sort of laminated themselves into the paint. If I was to epoxy the front bumper I would have a Bug fiber finish LOL
DubbsFaris
In this case, its at no cost for me. I did a favor and Im getting one back. The stripes dont get the film covering, the stencil cuts out any vinyl covering existing on the car in this particular mock up.
pgodden
So by clear Bra are you discussing the 3M type clear material installed on the front end? I am thinking of getting it on my 14, I haven't done any detailing on the new car yet but was considering this, how would it look on the gloss stripes? DubbsFaris
XPEL is what I beleive my guy is using. You say potato...I say potato. It's all the same stuff as long as you get the premium covering so it doesn't yellow or discolor. As i said earlier, xpel cuts the stripes out of their pattern. So your stripes don't get covered in their pattern. It will be about 2 weeks before mine gets done, but I will document and post pics of each pattern and how it looks ON the car so everyone can see it. pgodden
I was going to get some quotes on getting one of these installed. What sort of dollars should i pay and what do I have to watch out for or ask for?
VaporDude
Don't forget to get the headlights and fog lights done as well. Especially the fog lights, they take a good beating.
Shelbyville
How does the guarantee work on this stuff? If a rock goes clear thru the vinyl AND paint - do they repaint?
pgodden
Does one put this on the ground effects?

IMHO - get the stripes covered - just minimal air gap on the stripe/paint boundary - the protection is worth it.
MJN
Does one put this on the ground effects? Like what? If you have painted rockers or like the Shelby Carbon Splitter you sure can.
pgodden
Like what? If you have painted rockers or like the Shelby Carbon Splitter you sure can. I was curios about the black lower front splitter, seems to get marked up
MJN
I have never seen it done to the rough unpainted plastic parts, im not to sure how it would stick to the surface not being smooth with like a clear coat or something.

Fair enough... I am getting a quote next week. Should I be waxing or treating the car beforehand?
MJN
No wax, you want a nice clean surface for the clear bra to adhere to, you can though if you like make sure any defects or swirls get polished out to your level of acceptance before the bra goes on. DubbsFaris
How does the guarantee work on this stuff? If a rock goes clear thru the vinyl AND paint - do they repaint? The guarantee is for the film to not peel or turn yellow or crack. It's not a standard to bulletproof your car. I mean at some point, a rock gets big enough that no amount of anything can save your paint, right? That said, I had a fairly large rock drop off a flatbed trailer and I saw it coming, bouncing into my lane. I couldn't avoid it, and it hit my leading edge of raptor hood. It tore a huge chunk, like 1 inch, of the clear bra, but not dent, and no paint damage, and that is good enough for me!
DubbsFaris
IMHO - get the stripes covered - just minimal air gap on the stripe/paint boundary - the protection is worth it. They made the cutout versions for those with flat stripes, because it turns them glossy. But I have gloss red, so, yeah, no reason not to just do them I guess. Anyone here have experience with doing with the film butting up to the vinyl stripes? .
