New GPS Map Updates

Recommended Posts

Thanks for posting this. Personally, I've never been able to bring myself to pay for a map update for my cars or GPS's. I never understand why these updates cost so much. So far it hasn't affected me so I guess its a good move. A way to compensate is simply to get out the iPhone and use one of its apps which are always updated for free.

Did anyone read that it takes 3 hours to do this and you have to have the car on...then off then on again? Good grief..

They are all that way. I just turn the key to ACC and but a battery charger on the battery and let it do the upgrade with the engine off. I am not burning 3 hours of gas for an update.

I updated my navigation from version 3.0 to 6.0 today, yes it takes 3 hours but I did what scpinto did, turn the key to the ACC position and let her run the upgrade with the engine off. Haven't seen much difference other than a few roads that were not there before are now listed as a road and a few gas stations and banks that were not listed before are now listed. I don't see the point in updating with each release.

the google/droid Nav app is terrific and more accurate than the OEM GPS The droid is voice activated, and is much faster than the GPS in the car when you miss a turn--and its free and always current
