BIKEBOY
By now most folks have heard of the test for Alzheimers they call the "My 3 Words"...... I have been fortunate enuf to be able to work with folks with this horrible disease and know how discouraging it is for family members to watch a loved one go steadily down hill and forget the faces and names of the people they love so much. There are some very interesting new studies that show the incredible power of the I-Pod and music (through ear buds) and what music does to folks with this disease. Apparently music taps into a part of the brain that seems to be 'unharmed' by the disease? I have personally witnessed the AMAZING impact of music through ear buds (that is the key), through the ear buds, as it cancels out all outside 'white' noise and allows the brain to focus on JUST the music. When music that interests the individual is played through those ear pieces, they typically come alive in a fashion that other stimuli is NOT able to achieve. It is nothing short of amazing! Now, on to my post...... The following words have numbers ineserted in them in an attempt to trick the brain. If you can read this outloud with very little difficulty and stumbling through, Alzheimers is a long, long ways down the road before it gets anywhere near you. glroy
My wife was involved with Driver fitness for the Province of BC for many years, both physical and mental fitness. One evening I was discussing the issue of older drivers hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. I was discussing this subject with a PHD who's expertise was cognitive ability as we age. My question was because of the learned response of brake and then clutch to stop a car would this not help in the problem of drivers hitting the gas instead of the brake? The PHD confirmed that driving a standard would more than likely help with the pedal errors and it would also maintain cognitive ability. The process of driving a standard requires the use of both feet and both hands to do the different tasks at the same time using both sides of the brain. To keep your brain working; Keep jam those gears!!

To keep your brain working; Keep jam those gears!! I worked a Tow/Recovery Truck for some years (boy, can I tell ya stories!) I can't count on two hands how many cars I've pulled out of store fronts, side walls, the back of garages, etc. where the driver (ALWAYS elderly) said they had their foot MASHED on the brake pedal but brakes failed and the gas stuck wide open so they couldn't stop the car from plowing into the <object>. And oddly enough, the cops at the scene never thought any different, that they had their foot on the gas rather than the brake. I'm like....."ARE YOU FRIGGIN' STOOPID!? It's clear as day that the gas pedel didn't stick and the brakes failed at the same time! Phill
