My day at the NYC Auto Show... Long

Had to share the story so I hope you all enjoy.

I went to the NYC Auto show yesterday with the specfic intention of seeing the GT500 up close and personal.

Asked the boss for a 1/2 day off, pack my wife and kids in the car and off we go. Since it was early afternoon when we get there I was hoping for it to be less crowded than say on a weekend, but that was a pipedream. Wait on line get my tickets and we go in.

Now for the fun part, we start walking around and I immediately start looking for the Ford display section. First one to change my plans was my wife, "I have to go to the bathroom", so its off to find the potty. I say to myself, self don't get frustrated, we'll get to the Ford section soon enough.

By this time, my wife starts looking around at the Range Rover SUV's and suggests that this would be a good opportunity to look into possibly replacing the family minivan with something a little more modern. Okay, I say, besides we have the kids with us and we can take advantage of the letting them run amuck all over the cars to see what fits our needs. I'm in luck though, I spot the Blue Oval on the other side of the convention center, so I start herding my family in that direction.

Now did I mention the crowd, ah...yes I did. Every single car we walk up to has a family of 47 that wants their turn at sitting behind the wheel pretending that their Mario Andretti (sp?). So I wait patiently and slowly we make our way over. I mean slowly as in glacial shift so you can imagine my frame of mind right about now.

90 minutes go by and we pass Honda, Lexus, Toyota, and Mercedes just to name a few. The whole time I'm looking at my wife and watching her face to see if she likes anything. Can I tell you that every car we pass she has a look like; "that's okay but I don't like this" or "I'm not crazy about that". The only thing that she liked was the new 7 passenger R-Class Benz for 60K. Just goes to show you that my wife has the most expense taste know to man.

Finally, I'm about 50 feet from the Ford display and I start to get excited. I caught a glimpse of the blue and orange GT on display so I know the GT500 is close. That's when my youngest chimes in. She tells my wife, not me, that she is hungry. I swear that every female in my life is out to get me. So the choice is push on to see the GT500 or feed my kids. Actually, it was never my choice to make, see if ask my wife if I can just look at the car before we eat than I'm putting priority on the car and not my kids and a fight would soon commence.

Off we go to find some food but as usual in my day from hell, we have to go back to same way we came to find the food. Quickly, we walk back, I get food for the kids and sit them down. Finally a ray of hope, my kids actually sat quietly and ate quickly without me having to play, "open the tunnel, here comes the choo-choo" for 15 minutes. The kids are fed, we get up and make a quick bathroom pitstop and its off to the races again.

Low and behold, to my surpirise my wife tells my kids to behave and stay close because "daddy came here to look at his car". My wife then slowly reaches out and gently closes my mouth because it fell open from my astonishment, and tells me that this will stop me from drooling all over myself. So I grab my youngest's hand and my wife has my older daughter and I become this man on a mission. I attempt to make our way across the convention center to the Ford section with all possible haste.

Did I mention the crowds got bigger?

As we were making our was down an aisle my daughter stops me because dropped her stuffed animal and then it happened. I turn around to, and I swear like the parting of the Red Sea, the crowd opens and in front of me is the a red GT500 coupe w/ white stripes. I'm telling you that the only thing missing was rays of sunshine and choirs of angels singing. It was down right religious. I slowly walk over and carefully look the car over. This is the car that had me salivating since March of 2005. This is the car that has kept me gluded to the computer for countless nights. This is the car that has made me run a thousand different scenerios in my head as to how I'm I going to afford it.

As I am in my glory with this beautiful machine turning ever so slowly in front of me, my wife walks up next to me and says, "this is car you have been going crazy over, it's okay". I just about lost bodily function at that moment. I spin around and begin to spew every single performance and historical fact at her and she is looking at me with the deer caught in the headlights look. I just gave up. I snapped about 30 pictures of it and blew it a kiss as I walked away.

At this point the kids are starting to act up, the crowds are getting bigger, so it was time to leave.

We all walk back to the car and get ready for the ride home. For anyone who has ever experienced NYC during rush hour knows that the ride home took a long time. It was a quiet ride, my youngest feel asleep, my oldest was watching a movie, my wife was reading a magazine, and I had fanatasies of a wide open mountain road, shifting into second without the radio on.

Hope you enjoyed my day.

My day at the Chicago show was about the same, albeit the kid in tow was my 14 year old daughter that wanted to see notihng but the blinged-out Escalades (Damn you, MTV). It took me for freakin ever to get to the Ford display. Interestingly, the biggest crowd was around the SuperChief truck! There was a Gulf-series GT that may has well been a Yugo convertible. NO one around it! There was a smattering of folks at the GT500 display and once I got there, I saw why. Of the rainbow of colors from which they could have chosen, they opted to post a white with blue coupe. No 'Vert anywhere to be found. And while I mean no offense to those of you that prefer the classic white with blue, it looked like crap under those lights. As if there wasn't enough Ford Blue around the area, the spotlights had a blue tinge to them and the car simply washed out to nothing. Plus, the interior was charcoal and wasn't lighted, so it was nearly impossible for me to get pix. I got a few but they were grainy. The exterior shots were fine, and with a white flash it was better, but overall it was a yawner. (Pix previously posted some time ago in this forum). Which reminds me........

Where are the photos??

Congrats on making it through the day. You now officially have one "get out of hell free" card.

Good to have you back mrsuds, I'm glad to see you're pumped up about the car again.

Glad what you saw made you feel good. Did they have the white w/ blue strips there? I'm going to the show saturday. I hope to see the white / blue combo, as I need to make up my mind. Either the red / white or white / blue. I saw my dealer up in Buffalo saturday before Easter and they assured me I would get the 5th one they get in. They have taken deposits of $4000 for 10 cars. The sales write up states $4000 deposit going towards sale at MSRP. If #5 is not an 07 it will be an 08.

Good Luck,

I never really left. I've been lurking the whole time. I guess I needed a break. I'm glad you missed me.

As for the other posts, my pleasure. I thought I would share my experience. I could write volumes about my life and each one is better than the next.

The pictures came out crappy. All the blue caused the pictures to look hazy or maybe just that my camera was against yesterday as well. The best shot I have has a big blue reflection where the side mirror should be. Oh well, its looks great in my memory.

Now if I can only get it in the house without my wife knowing.

No, I only saw the red one, but the GT350-H was right next to it but on the floor. That is also a very nice ride. I'm probably on an '08 time frame. Too many things going on plus I refuse to pay over MSRP. Although the car was very easy on the eyes..

Excellent story, Mr Suds! You should seriously look into writing, as you're a natural. I felt as though I was reading through the monthly editorial in MM&FF, and being the fanatic that I am, I *live* for that!

The car show in Cleveland was similar. I went on dealer night, and the place was absolutely swamped. Like yourself, I waited in line for quite a white to make eyes with the GT500. I even listened as some drunken asshole in front of me started spouting off comments about the new Camaro giving the GT500 a run for it's money. He went on to tell his guest that he bets his stock 1980 Camaro will blow the GT500 off the road. :hysterical: It was a hoot, I tell ya!

The Gulf edition GT was much like you described............sitting in a desolate area, with NOBODY gathered around it. As fantastic as that car is, I think its moment is over. All the GT500 hoopla sorta makes the GT look like last week's leftovers.

Wow. Fantastic story Mr S! Sounds like my kids (3 1/2 and 4 1/2). Man, I am sorry I missed that show, sounds like I missed yet another great event. Guess that's just my luck lately... :violin:

Trust me you didn't miss much. The show was ok. The car's were ok. Nothing really floated my boat, so to speak.

Now we get this crankshaft problem. I'm starting to get happy that 2008 might be the year for me.

Please don't kill me but the Challenger and yeak....Camaro are very nice looking cars.

Excellent story, Mr Suds!

I was really sucked into your story. It took me to the show and could imagine myself at the show. Really great.

My only time at an American car show was NAIAS, but I was lucky to have press credentials. No crowds and lots of time to spent around the cars and eat everywhere for free. :happy feet: Car shows here in Europe are the same. Boat shows too, BTW.
