30 or 35 Aspect Ratio? need your opinion.

Decisions Decisions and there is always a circumstance that effects one or the other. I'm debating on tires for my Alcoa's. Currently, I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (not the super sports) on my stock rims with a 275/35 on the rear, I want to move these to the front on the 9" alcoa which leads me to the rear where I'm struggling with the decision of sidewall size.

To match all four tires, I need 2 MPS A/S Plus. However, my only choices for that tire are 295/25 and 285/30 to which the /25 is eliminated completely. That's just too short at just under 74mm.

So now I'm faced with a different type of tire on the rear, like a 295/35 MPSS, or go with the 285/30 A/S Plus to match the front. But I'm concerned about the low sidewall height of the /30.

How did you guys make your aspect ratio decision and how do you feel about it now that they're on the car?

I ran Nitto Invo's: 295/35, and never cared for the look of the tall sidewall. Also, I realize that different manufacturers have a different style tread design which effects the look of the sidewall height and it seems to me like the Michelin is more rounded than the Invo's which can make the Invo look a bit more tall.

My first choice is the 285/30 in order to match all 4 tires but whether I go with a 295/30, 295/35, or a 285/30 will depend on your comments and experience.

NJPat, just what the dr ordered! thanks for the photo!!! Did the lower profile tire hurt the ride quality much?

Personally, I would go with the tallest sidewall I could get and still maintain a decent diameter. I plan on going with a 295-35-20 Michelin PSS on the rear.

Is this on a 2013? What rear gear ratio?

Snoopy, my car is a 12 with PP so the gear is 3:73. Thank you for the reply.

no issue on ride quality - Pilot SS actually ride better than the Goodyears

Note: my car was lowered by SAI as part of the GT350 package, so there is no wheel well gap

don't know how a 30 aspect ratio would look on a non-lowered car

best

Good to hear, I think your car may be a little lower than mine but I do have the FRPP lowering springs.

One last question, is that a 9 or 10 inch rim on the front?

Frankly, I think the 30's always look better in the rear... but more importantly is that different tire makes have different diameters even though they have the identical size. So, make sure you're in the 27.7-28.5 range and you should be fine. The Nitto's run tall....

Just a follow up to this post.

I had been running Nitto Invo's with a 295/35 and never did care for the sidewall height, they just seemed to have a tall look to them. Which was the primary reason that I struggled with deciding on aspect ratio.

Ended up with Michelin PSS with a 295/35 on my Alcoa's which are the same size as the Invo's. However, I'm quite surprised at the difference in the two tires. The Michelins do not appear as tall and they do appear wider than the Invo's and stick out against the fender more.

Yesterday I installed front 275x35x20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on 50th Anniversary wheels and 295x35x20 on the rear, they stick out quit a lot, to much in my opinion. So Ive ordered in 285x35x20 to replace the 295s.

Anyone have 285's on the rear, Im even cosidering going with 275s for the rear I was just hoping to be staggered since Im running 20x10 all the way around. I love the front tires they really made the ride much more responsive, and also I dont notice the front wheels grabbing the ruts like the stock tires and wheels seemed to.

Thats exactly what i don't want!! Im just very surprised people put up with that offset situation! I haven't seen a car with widened rear wheels except in pictures and some do look good, although i wish i could see one in person to make sure i will be happy.

That's exactly what I had to do AZ. I posted my results so that hopefully, no one else would make the same mistake I did. I'll try and get some pictures of my 285's soon but they're a perfect fit in my opinion.

Yes please! I hate the way these 295/35/20 look (Baja Bug) so I had Discount tire order me in 285 and potentially 275 just in case. It seems when you order in tires of this expense no one has them so everytime you need em you have to wait a week to get em. Im waiting now should be next Wednesday or Thursday. So yhour running the 285/35/20 in the rear now?

275/30/20 up front and 285/30/20 in the rear. The 285's just didn't look right up front and I was afraid they would rub as my car has the racing springs. Side wall size front to rear is very close and acheived the exact look I was going for. A little more road noise out of the 30 series tires though..... Just keep your foot in the throttle and the road noise is drowned out by the exhaust note. :shift:

Major improvement and very happy with the Michelins.

Good picture but I need to see 285/35/20 :)

I'll add all mine here, it will help someone someday looking for the sizes we mentioned here so this is a good thread.

For our GT500's, if you were to run 20" x 9" Alcoas on all four corners, what would be the best tire size to use? I would like to use 275/35/20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports (MPSS) but worry they will rub the rear fenders (because it looks like a 295/35/20 will rub on the rear on a 10" Alcoa and the amount of bulge would be similar?). I could run 265/35/20 MPSS, but I want to make sure I have a decent amount tire to protect the rim edge and fill out the rim. I have also looked into 265/40/20's but they may be a bit tall to use? Is anyone running 255/40/20 tires on 9" Alcoas? Any suggestions, especially with pictures, would be greatly apprecited. I really just pleasure cruise and cross country tour with our Shelby, so wide tires, etc. don't interest me much. I really want a nice tire for fitment and would rather have the ability to rotate tires and also carry a spare in the trunk in case of an emergency instead of all straight line traction. Thanks guys!!

You'll be fine with 275's. My 40th came with 9" Razors all the way around and 275/35/20's on the rear (255/35/20 front) and this is with the eibach (lowered) suspension.

I believe the problem with the 295's are that the sidewalls, being taller than the 275's may not have enough rear fender clearance especially with a lowered car. Some, with stock suspension have gotten away with the 295's without issue particularly when using a 30 A/R.

For the record I didnt widen my wheels I went completly with Michelin Pilot Super Sports 275/35/R20 on all 4 corners. Because even the 285s hung over the fender wheels to much I just didnt like the way they looked. Thanks to Discount Tire, they were very helpful and actually ordered in all 3 size tires for me, the 295's - 285's - 275's they test fitted all tires for me. If your in the market for tires and a shop is not willing to help you with this 100% find another shop.

You will also notice my wheels are powder coated, I love them!

In the end with the cost of these tires I wanted the ability to rotate them, just to get more life out of them. These tires absolutely dominate the Goodyear Eagle F1's or as I like to lovingly refer to them the Goodwills. They added a nice ride, grip like a mofo and seem very quiet. One thing Ive noticed is that the F1's seemed to flat spot quickly when sitting even over night, I have not noticed that with the SS.

Im very happy, and now that I have tires and wheels sorted out its time to move on to more suspension and performance mods and Im doing even more cosmetic appearances as well. Im saving right now for a SS Hood.
