Brake upgrade?

Hi all, quick question for those who have most likely already been down this road well before me: So i just purchased my 2007 SGT this last June (yea me!)... Car had brand new tires already installed when i took it home. I am looking into upgrading the brakes, but from what I am reading, almost all options look like they will require new wheels. I have been browsing ebay and other mustang forums for some gt500 take offs (brembos), looked at the SPP brake kits... I have seen some take offs for $800, but looks like i would then need new wheels.

 

What is recommended to keep the wheels that came with the car and improve the brakes? Could one just get better rotors and pads? thanks in advance!

 

edit - it is a daily driver for the summer, not tracked (although I may take it to BIR once or twice this summmer???)

Stainless steel lines, better fluid, rotors and pads will help out

 

Originally i went with Goodridge lines, ATE Super Blue DOT 4 Racing Brake Fluid, Baer Decelarotors and Hawk HPS pads

 

Since than I completely did a redo and went with a Wilwood big brake set up which required new wheels

Yes and that's basically whats done when someone upgrades their Shelby GT with the GT/SC package. SAI installs new drilled/slotted rotors, stainless brake lines and hi performance pads.. Although SAI doesn't change the brake fluid that would be something to also do.

 

As you're finding out, almost any caliper or rotor size upgrade requires larger wheels.

Thanks for the info i just got a hertz car and want to do something similar i have the brembo's and rotor upgrage from SPP on my other car with the whipple this one is going to stay stock except a set of CAMs I am going to go to the 18" SGT wheels on the car. From talking with Jer and Keith and notes on SPP website i dont think you can put the Shelby Plus kit on without changing wheels :( What kit do you guys put on with the GT/SC package i dont see in on the SPP site.

See the links in my sig - I installed Baer GT drilled and slotted rotors, S/S brake lines in hi-per. fluid. Just recently I have installed the Shelby GT brake duct system as well. For track events I install the hi-perf. pads.

are you pretty happy with these rotors and pad set-up?

 

 

I went the same route on my 2007 SGT... Rotors, Pads, Lines, Ducts & Fluids... Worked well, for a while... But once you can "stop" better, you then want to be able to "go" faster... And once you start "going" faster on the track, this particular setup (utilizing the OEM 18" Wheels and stock GT calipers) won't last too long... And eventually, I ended up replacing them with a set of take-off Brembos & SVT Wheels from a 2007 GT500... After that, it was a matter of finding a tire that lasts long enough on the track...

 

So you can see that it is a very slippery slope, once you start going down this particular "upgrade" path... And I didn't even consider the cost of a matching set (Front & Rear) of Bear BIG Brakes... However, I can say that the Brembo/Wheel/Tire setup on a stock BOSS 302 (very similar to the OEM GT500 setup) does very well on the track :peelout:

Early on I destroyed my brakes at the first track event I took this car to. This was definitely a huge weak link on this car. I spoke with a Ford engineer at the Mid America Shelby Nationals and his recommendation was a brake cooling kit, dot 4 fluid, and pads, I used Performance Friction Metallic pads. Huge brake fade with tons of smoke was what I used to have, now the difference is amazing. I've pounded the heck out of these at the track with no complaints. Try this first, and if you decide on a big brake kit, do the cooling ducts anyway.

My 07SGT has 20" Razors with 40MM offset. I know the big brake kits will not fit this wheel.I plan on going with the 14" Shelby Baer Eradispeed Plus 2 rotor with caliper relocation brackets upgrade. Does anyone know if this kit will work with my current wheels? Along with that, I plan on installing stainless steel lines and the Shelby brake duct kit.I plan on doing some track days in the spring at the beginner time trial level and am looking for some extra braking capability and, appearance-wise, to fill the wheels. Any help is appreciated-thanks.

Hey guys - New guy here. I've had my 07 SGT for about a year and absolutely love it. I recently started driving in track events (SCCA PDX/Chin Motorsports - not actual "racing") and haven't had any problems with the OEM brakes but know I'm going to need better braking at some point. I was considering a full Wilwood or Brembo kit but, based on the comments above, it appears the stock wheel won't work. As such, I may go the rotor/pad/cooling/fluid route described above. One question - do I need to stick with the OEM size rotor? It seems like there is a lot of space inside the wheels (particularly in back) that would allow larger rotors. Thanks for your help!

 

P.S. I'm as new to working on the car as I am to driving around a track so don't worry about offending me with the obvious or basic info, as I'm pretty much clueless. Thanks!
