Suspension Discussion (Coilovers/Watts Link)

Hey guys,

 

I have some big plans for the car this spring. It's time the stock FRPP shocks and springs go as I have about 23K miles on the car and considering they're almost 6 years old. Not to mention the stock FRPP shocks like to rough you up a bit when you're going over some not so smooth road.

 

I'm going with coilovers so that I can adjust the ride height a bit lower (1/4" or so) and so I have full adjustability for street and track use. Not to mention, the stainless steel coilovers won't chip or crack like painted shocks (FRPP, Koni etc.) and have a lifetime warranty.

 

Debating between KW V3's or H&R RSS Coilovers; Either way they are both awesome coilover kits.

I'm also going to be putting a Watts link on the car and I'm really leaning towards the Fays2.

 

Looking to hear what input some of you may have (The guys who run track/know what they're talking about) etc.

Both the H&R and the KW ride stiff - hope your willing to buy additional springs to change out in order to get the ride quality your looking for. I have used both in the past. The fays2 watts is a fantastic piece - have experience with installing it on several cars including my own 2007 GT500.

Consider Tokico - they make great adjustable units that go from gentle to full race stiffness, all with the turn of a key. Here is a link: http://www.steeda.com/store/tokico-05-10-mustang-d-spec-shocks-struts.html I am having them put on my car now.

Both the H&R and the KW ride stiff - hope your willing to buy additional springs to change out in order to get the ride quality your looking for. I have used both in the past. The fays2 watts is a fantastic piece - have experience with installing it on several cars including my own 2007 GT500.

 

 

Yes they will ride stiff, but it's the rebound on the FRPP shocks that's the issue. The Coilovers wont ride "as" harsh because I can adjust the rebound and dampening. I for one have no problem with a rough ride, it's the sacrifice you make, Performance or Comfort.

Link isn't working, but did you consider Koni Yellows? If you're going the "shock" route keeping your stock lowering springs, I'd personally go with Koni's.

I have had them all... coilovers, Konis, Eibach, BMR, Steeda and others.

 

For predominant street car with 10 track days a year, you can not beat Tokico D Specs and FRPP K springs. I went nuts trying to get the double adjustable Konis set right. The Tokicos are amazing, rebound and compression adjustments are very linear and very efficiently matched.

 

I have 60K miles on my first Fay's2 and it still is the best single mod on the car.

With that said I would say go with the KW variant 3 . I have one customer that runs open track events with a Roush TrackPak 427R that I put the fays2 watts and BMR LCAs (front and rear) along with a Steeda Spherical upper diff bushing and he has done really well with it . That ride came with the KW variant3 on it to begin with and was not hard at all to dial in . Also he is running Nitto NT01 275/40-18 all around on the Roush 18x10 wheels and he drives it to and from the track like that for the last 3+ years.

P.S. - The rear is not a true coilover setup - it is an adjuster under the spring in the stock location separate from the shock on the KW.
