ale99
Hi I went to Ford because my mustang was making a rattling noise and they said it was the exhaust and they had to buy a new part. I read the article that said what was wrong with my car when my technician wasn't there and it says nothing about needing a new part. They want to charge me $275 to fix it. Is that a fair price? JeffIsHereToo
There are three main causes of this. The bracket, which is usually a vibration, as described in the TSB which is simply to remove it so $275 is seriously outrageous. A broken bracket from the muffler or other exhaust component usually results in rattle or banging sound every so often A broken baffle inside one or both of the mufflers which will send a nice rattle/vibration sound through the car I had all three on my SGT at one time or another. Good luck!
johnrehder
One of my brackets was broken off right at the muffler and made a rattling noise, had it re-welded by a good friend. I'd drive it up on a ramp if possible and look at the brackets. good luck

bnoslo
Did the dealer explain what was causing the problem? If they haven't, don't approve any work until you understand what they found and especially what they are going to do.

ilmor
ale99 - First easy check I would do is, with the car on the ground and the engine off / exhaust cool, level surface, parking brake engaged - i.e. the car won't move!, look under the rear of the car at each muffler while pulling downward on each exhaust tip. If the rear-most muffler hanger bracket is broken, you'll know it pretty quickly. The broken-off bracket will probably still be hanging by itself in the rubber isolator. I currently have this same issue for the second time. In early October I plan to remove the muffler and find a good welder.
MyBlueHeaven
I had the broken exhaust hangers as well and had both sides rewelded for good measure, the vibtation and noise was very annoying. cost $20 and took about 10 minutes. Was under the car yesterday and found yet another broken hanger, this one in the forward side of the muffler. Kind of sad that these hangers are breaking off after such a short period of time with the little use the car gets. If your car is covered under the TSB I'd wave the BS flag and show them a print out of what you found. Or ask them to explain why it's not covered. Just my .02 Cents Jeff

MyBlueHeaven
This time it's the passenger side. Mine was the passenger side also. Both times, front hanger and back. I was lucky I found it when I did, another couple of days and the hanger would have fallen out of the rubber grommet. There was no noise or vibration with the front hanger broken, only the rear ones.
