Front Brake Cooling Ducts

Super Snake

Recommended Posts

Some of you may already know this but for those who may not. During my first oil change I noticed this, the connections for the front brake cooling ducts are already there, this is behind the lower grill. Talk about forward thinking.

did you guys know they were there?

Yup. I think that it was Hot Rod Magazine that mentioned them in a side bar column that was with the main article about the 500 back in June of 2006 I believe it was.

Good pictures.

I've already opened mine up and ran ducts up the driver's fender for better cold-air delivery for the intake

sprint ... great idea ... has to help ...

im thinking something like a vacuum line based on the size of the hole. Usually when I am doing projects .. i measure the OD of duct .... and than walk around home depot and find something that would work.

from that photo, it looks like you will need to go with a small hole saw to cut thru the front of the grill. I think the advantage of something like the SAI system is that it has a piece that will cover the rougher cut edges from the front. Also, the hose will need to have different characteristics depending on whether the cold air is being ducted to the brakes or the intake air. Need a lot more flex for the brakes, plus hopefully the SAI system will have an easy way to attach it to the brake rotor area. Just can't see why it is taking so long to get it on the market.

I agree.I think SAI will have the components to trim the install out nicely. The ducts are typical aviation or racing style cooling ducts. I would suspect some kind of exit flange at the brake disc as well. I just thought it was interesting that the front valance design has the provisions already there, that in and of itself is pretty smart. It does however lend an easier path for the do it yourselfer

I just used a drimmel to rout out the webs of the OE grill. You can barely notice it only if you catch a glimpse of the orange paint in the right light at the right angle. No one at 3 days of the car show even noticed.

As far as ducts, for the cold air intake purpose I just used a replacement hose for a shop vac and modified some of the fittings. We'll see if the right side duct holds up in the summer (I routed it above the splitter tray below the radiators) it may melt.

If your're wanting brake ducts I wouldn't use anything plastic! Later this summer I'll be doing some OT events with heat paint on the rotors to see if we even need ducts. If so I'm going to take the fog lights out and run aluminum ducts back from there.....

Got any pix

So far unless you’re running hot laps I think the cooling ducts will be a novelty. Not sure what SAI will be charging for them. They do have a nice grill insert with a screen to keep the big debris out.

I ran 8 sessions (15 min. each) at Hallett on March 24; (2 sessions back-to-back and cool off, repeat) and had no brake fad at all. But it was only in the low 70's......

What is the diameter of the outlet?

how exactly do you attach this brake cooling duct to your brakes?

anyone know how the setup from SAI will work?

I snagged a pair of Bruce's duct plates over on svtp.....but haven't yet determined if they are necessary to maintain correct operating temp's during track duty.
