Race today down the Interstate with Cadillac Convert

I finally got the guts to open her today- all the way...well the truth is I was provoked a little :happy feet:

I really haven't wanted to get pulled over so I have timidly pushed her only to 130 once....well today I got some motivation to push her.....hard and wide open

I was on the Interstate headed south between Chattanooga and B'ham. I was cruising between 80-90. I came up on one of those hard top Cadillac XLR Roadster verts (his top was up, fyi). As I was coming up on him I noticed he was moving pretty good, so I punched it and gently moved on by. I was about two car lengths ahead and I noticed him not dropping back. I guessed he was going to ease up beside me. Well he did...kind of....actually he had punched it hard and was in front of me before I knew it.

I was in 6th gear at the time still running about 85-90ish. He jumped to about two car lengths ahead of me before I really realized he was going for broke. THE RACE WAS ONE!!! FINALLY I HAD THE PERFECT SITUATION TO SEE WHAT OL SHELBY WOULD DO..I JUST HAD A FEELING HE WAS GOING TO MAKE ME TAKE HER TO HER MAX.

I dropped her down to 5th (she didn't "kick it" as you can imagine) but I and was able to stop him from pulling away fairly quickly, but he was actually about 6 car lengths ahead and had it on the floor. I was on the floor too now We were moving on...100...110...120...fortunately there as no traffic. Just him and me. ....130...135..I had caught him and was staying right there...about a car length back. His rate of acceleration he stopped. I was there. I decided to push him instead of trying to pass him. I didn't want to get in front and then him back off and me not get to see what Shelby would do so I just baited him a little (plus, I wanted didn't want to be out front...my dumb thinking was I guess I felt more vulnerable for a ticket out front..go figure) anyway, I was pushing him hard....140....145....I was really having to concentrate on keeping it straight; didn't want to make some dumb mistake and end up rolling her down the Interstate......I had both hands on the wheel....150. I was all over him......then we hit 155...I swear...IT WAS A BLAST!!!

I think the guy was surprised that I had caught and stayed with him....I was breathing down his neck....We caught up with some traffic about that time and he tapped his brake...signally me he was through.

The whole thing was over in a flash.....honestly, I lost all sense of time but it seemed like it didn't last but a couple of minutes max.

I had been thinking about opening her up before I came up on the guy, but had decided against it...didn't want to pass a cop sitting there waiting...but when this guy kicked it in, I didn't have to think twice. I knew this was it...but I just didn't know how serious the guy was going to be...well I was not disappointed...he took the bait... I had looked at buying on of those cars before I ordered my Shelby (but they are $90,000 base cost) but I don't remember it being much faster than he had it. I know he had the open space to keep it going but think it was all his car would do. It would have been real interesting had I pulled out beside him to pass...honestly, think I could have taken him, but would have needed a bit more road.

I caught him pretty fast and he didn't pull away once we both had it floored....

Now to the best part......I was top down.....and letting it all hang out. It was a blast racing down the interstate in a relatively safe situation with a guy who had it opened up and I wasn't letting him have his way...all the while I was airing it out.....top down :happy feet: I love to ride top down and do it all the time but this time was a ride I won't soon forget...

Next time try 4th. Youll get to 155 ALOT QUICKER. It will be 120-130-140-150 not 115-120-125-130-135 LOL

Yeah, I hear ya....I hadn't been in that situation before and didn't want to blow the opportunity of the race by redlining her...but next time I will.

He probably thinks you didn't have enough to pass him. Next time at 80 throw it in 3rd you wimp and tromp on it , redline 3rd and hit 4th and tromp it again you will be at speed so fast AND all you'll see is 1/4 mile back headlights and you can hit the brakes all in a few seconds, DONE YOU WOOPED HIM! Since you haven't done that YOU HAVE TO and you'll see the monster awaken!! :hysterical2: You'll get the hang of it someday!!

Agreed.

At that speed, double clutch it to third, then down to 4th and then to 5th if you even need it. You should have pulled that guy in easily, and passed him imo with a different gear selection at the start. Awesome story though, and not hating, just suggesting for next time. :happy feet:

How did it feel at 140+? Floaty, or planted?

Good thing he didn't go beyond 150-155.... your limiter was about to kick in and cut the fuel... THAT would have sucked!

Actually believe it or not my limiter didn't kick in when I played with a GTO, . I saw him on the highway going into Pittsburgh and I did a quick driveby, got his attention, he followed me til it opened up to 3 lanes I know where all the cops sit, by the way( in that area) and at 80 he sat in the pass lane enough to let me out, so I threw it in 3rd moved over and stepped on it, he already was on it (practally on my bumper) for 1/2 sec. I walked away from him by the time I looked down in 5th, a few seconds later I was reading 160 exactly! The rev limiter wasn't slowing me down either, I just let off the gas. I'm thinking it should have kicked in at 157+/- 1mh but the speedo said 160+ a hair on the high side of the 160 before I let off?? The GTO was a long way back, it took him a few seconds to catch up when I let off. Haven't pushed it that far maybe 145 since, I don't do it for extended periods just a quick blast to remind me how fun it is. You guys that don't play with you vehicle a little are missing the fun. Just pick a road you know WELL and play. Its what the car was built for. :banvictory::spiteful:

At 90, I would put the clutch in, take it out of gear, let the clutch out then gun it up to the RPM's it will be at 90, put the clutch in put it in 3rd and floor it while I quickly release the clutch, thus matching the RPM's and ensuring a smooth and powerful downshift.

Isn't that referred to as a double clutch?

<confused>

btw, I think you left out the step where you put it into the gear you wanted to be in.

Not something you want to forget.

I just did a little research on that caddy, and it ain't no slouch. 0-60 in 4.6, and the quarter in 13 flat. Weighs in at 3800 lbs, with 446 HP under the hood. Just a hair slower than a stock GT500, but not much. The Mustang's 55 more hp should have better top end though. MSRP's at $100,000.
