AndyGJ
Just curious if anyone can give me some feedback on the Underdrive Pulley upgrade for an SGT... I understand it will free up a little HP at the rear wheels, and also can improve gas mileage, but are there any negative effects to it? What brands are recommended or do you have? If I add a SC later, are they compatable still or do you just put the stock one back on? As you can tell, I'm still looking for a few basic mods for low cost that will wake up the motor a little bit without spending the money it would take for an SC right now...not it the budget. Thanks, Andy.
Bill Hamilton
Well first off, a Shelby GT may be different, however I used a set on a 1989 Mustang LX5.0 years ago. I saw a little gain, but a bigger problem was it was a daily driver and while sitting at a traffic light at night with the air and other accessories running my lights would get dim and I could see a big drop on my amp gauge. With the 5-speed, 2.73 axle ratio, and running in fifth-gear at speeds below 45 or 50 my amp gauge was usually discharging instead of charging. Newer cars have a lot of electrical accessories which can cause a big drain. Steeper gears like 3.55 plus may be a different story, a car that sees a lot of track time and needs the few extra hp may also be a different story. I wouldn't get underdrive pullies until I was looking for the last few hp on a car that is mostly street driven. Good luck and continue to do your research. ARMORINE
pros, everything cons, nothing, except price. i have em love em. engine revs faster with them. i have the steeda set. i love it. idling and power is no ta problem. my car idles at 725 with the cams and i've never had an issue as long as it doesn't drop any lower. factory set up actually overdrives the accessories, the under drives just drop speeds by around 25 percent(if i remember correctly) if your going all out NA youll want them. if your plans dont include pushing the motor NA then id spend the money else where. old man
I have the steeda ones on my 07 GTH and have noticed no negitive factors.
ilmor
I have the Steedas on mine. Seat of the pants tells me that they did "wake up" the motor a little bit. It definitely revs quicker, I noticed right away. I got 28 mpg on my trip from CT to WV a couple of months ago. I got my set used, which I think is the way to go. I've had no negative issues; glad I bought them!
AndyGJ
At the end of the day, I'm looking to get some extra kick out of the engine...short term mod plans would be to look at FRPP headers and Hot Rod cams, 62 mm throttle body, larger CAI / tube, and 93 octane tune. Is this pulley upgrade something I can do myself or should I pay a shop to do it? Is a tune update needed as well from the SAI tune? Andy

americaniron
I had them for quite some time before I added my supercharger, and there were no negative effects at all. It works well with the gammit of bolt ons that you do if you are to stay N.A. However they will not work when you supercharge your engine. They are easy to install, and remove when you decide to go F.I. I had the Steeda ones which I recommend.

ilmor
No tune update is required for the pullies alone.

AndyGJ
Glad you're enjoying them. Yeah, I felt the same way, as if the crank and pistons had lost weight somehow! LOL I saw NO downside whatsoever. Jer When I saw Ilmor's post, I thought I recalled he got them from an "outstanding" source!! Nice to know that both former and present owner of the pulley were/are well pleased with the results . I just wish I could afford to go straight to the SC route right now and forget all this beating around the bush for small performance gain mods! Thanks Ilmor & Jer!! (and others who chimed in). Andy. ilmor
If I may change the subject a little bit, have any of you guys installed one of these BB&K throttle bodies? I haven't read anything negative about them yet. I might be tempted to install one one of these days... http://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-62mm-throttle-body-05gt.html
AndyGJ
I know it costs more, but I have considered the FRPP one at a reseller where I have ordered some other parts - cost was $499 and included all the motor and sensors so that it was a direct bolt on straight out of the box. It also looks better IMO with the FRPP logo front and center. It is about $180 more for the extra motor and sensor parts and the "logo". I was also looking at this with a 93 octane tune and larger 110 mm CAI...ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS IF THIS WILL HAVE A SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT ON PERFORMANCE? They worked great in Victoria, BC. On a road trip to PS one summmer spent lots of $$ trying to fix and over heating problem that apeared in temp of 104 F outside. Had to leave PS at night when temps were aroud 90 F to get home from holidays. I Got home and took the pullies off. The next summer in PS no issues with overheating. Contact Alex and get his view on underdrive pullies in + 100 temps. Just my experience, I did like the HP gain in cooler temps. It was like driving with the AC on and the boost you get when you turn the AC off. Cost is about 10% on your way to a SC. Save your coins for the SC nothing is quite like jaming a few more pounds of air and gas into the cylinders.
