VNMOUS1
Will the Hertz Rent a shelby be an automatic transmission? (From the Shelby and Hertz releases) >>>Ford Racing Performance Group is supplying its popular Power Pack (FR1) to add a genuine 25-horsepower Ford performance kick to the 300-horse Mustang GT 4.6L V-8/Five-speed automatic transmission powertrain and an increase of 10 lb.-ft. of torque. The package includes Ford Racing’s 90mm Cold Air kit, the Muffler Kit, a new X-pipe similar to the one used on the new Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, a performance calibration and a cat-back performance exhaust for that throaty sound that will make this car unmistakably a Shelby Mustang GT-H. <<<<

Forget the test drive when renting one you can have it for a few days to see if you want it. They won't be available for sale. They will likely turn out to be sold as "off service" units once Hertz retires them. When they did it in the 60s, employees grabbed a bunch of them. Hertz (and everyone else) is more savvy now. If they're smart, they'll auction them off. However they manage to hit mainstream America, rest assured they'll have had the snot ran out of them. bj

68fastback
I would never buy a rental but I would just like to see how the GT-500 is before buying one. Live with it for a few days as opposed to a test drive. Yeah, I would never buy one either. The Ford rep told me Hertz will rent them for one year and then they'll be auctioned. Back in '66 the engines didn't stay in those cars very long... The two Hertz had at the LaGuardia airport location in NY had their engines swapped by guys who had the 271HP hi-pos since the Hertz Shelby's were 306HP. Also, the Hertz 'service team' can barely figure how to keep air in the tires of a Focus, so I'm not feelin' good that whatever milage the GT500Hs may have when they're auctioned is proportional to their wear. Damn, those things are gonna be smoked by everyone who rents 'em. At least Ford will get some good durability feedback 'cause if they last a year being beat to crap, then that's impressive! Actually, the local taxi fleet service chief told me even the 4.6 2-valve motors in their crown-vics are really tough -- they routinely run them in hard fleet service for 300-350K mi and then sell them to their employees! Hard to believe, huh?

Well if you are one of the firsts lucky ones to rent one that hasn't been beat up you will get to experience it before buying a new GT-500. :happy feet: As far as durability a CHP officer told me their 5.0 Mustang was the most durable and the best one. Live with it for a few days as opposed to a test drive. Then you're gonna have to look for something else. There is no comparison between the two other than the basic body style, the interior switchgear and Shelby logos on them. The motors are completely different, the suspension components and handling characteristics will be different. One's a hopped-up Mustang GT. Shelby GT-H: 4.6L 325hp (with Ford Perf mods) and handling upgrades from Ford Performance GT500: 5.4L 500hp...lots of extra weight in the nose...FR-spec suspension components including Brembos in the front. Oh....and a buttload more reaction when you stomp on the loud pedal. Rent the Hertz for fun...not comparison. You already have a C6, right? That's probably the closest you'll come to a performance comparison with the GT500. Almost identical power to weight ratios at 7.75 and 7.8 HP/LB. The Vette will outhandle the GT500. The GT500 will feel more "ferocious" if not faster. I've driven C6s and had two C5's. Although (IMHO) the interior quality is that of a premium Yugo, the ride and power has been so refined that it's more of a "rider's" car than a "driver's" car. It takes zero effort except at the limit. I'm guessing that I'll need to be far more on my toes driving the GT500 than riding in a late model Corvette. Oh...and I wouldn't worry about a test drive in the GT500. There's not a shot in hell that you...me...or anyone else will get one. If someone does, I want pictures! bj

And as info I have read in several places that the Hertz cars are going to auction. I sure hope that anybody who buys one doesn't get one I drove.... I'm surprised they haven't picked Robert up and tied him up in the trunk! I love what he's doing...it's clearly a passion for him...and it's great for all of us that aren't exactlyin the neighborhood. (Thanks Robert) And, I'll bet you're right. As soon as Job 1 starts, I'll be he's in one if the trial cars (early production). I want to hear and see his reaction on video from the driver's seat! bj

If someone does, I want pictures! bj I concur with you the GT-H then is a different car but I still wouldn't mind renting one for the hell of it. The GT-500 is doesn't have the balance and weight distribution of the Corvette and of course it is close to 4,000 lbs. I would expect the C-6 is a much smoother riding car if that is what you mean by a "rider's car" a much easier car to drive whereas the GT-500 is not going to be as smooth as the Corvette perhaps a bit more of a stiffer rougher riding car. (My days of stiff suspensions are just about over) My 88.5.0 took care of that to where I have to see a chriopractor for my back and neck so I had to go for a smoother riding performance car. A test drive in a GT-500? I can only wish Rental? Forget it:hysterical2:
