Slight burning smell in '13 Shelby after test drive

Recommended Posts

I went with a friend of mine to take a short test drive of an in stock '13 Shelby at a local dealership that he was potentially interested in. Initially we went to just look at the car and we were surprised that the dealership offered the opportunity to take a short drive. After the drive of less than 2 miles, there was a slight burning smell when we exited the car. My friend did not get on the car at all, he was in second and third gear most of the time on quiet suburban streets. Any idea what the smell might have been attributed to?

It could have been brakes, if you did some hard stopping. Aside from that, I'd guess it was just the new/hot smell that comes the first few times you run new "machinery" up to operating temp. (e.g., My Toyota Tacoma had such an odor the first few times I got it up to temp with the new stainless exhuast I installed last year.)

Any new car/engine/exhaust parts will burn off dust, oils, whatever. Anything that's on the engine and other parts that get hot, including engine's painted parts, will give off a smell untill all solvents have evaporated. The engine also starts out running rich with a fresh factory tune, so the catalytic convertors are probably also burning a bit smelly... Probably all just normal new car smells. If it continued to do it or got worse, then I'd be concerned. :)
