Mini Catastrophe last night on a C&R Radiator Install... HELP?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks... I hate that the first time back on the site in many months is to ask for help, but so it is.

So last night I began the install of numerous things, one being a new oversized C&R/Shelby Radiator and dual fan intercooler. First let me just clue anyone in on how much of a friggin nightmare this is... it's a friggin nightmmare. At least the radiator anyway... I finally got it in there, but I had to take pretty much EVERYTHING off the front end. Even the HORNS! Maybe it's a little easier in a GT500 which I believe these are truly made from, but man... what a paint.

LONG story short, I finally get it all installed... mount it up... get a little ahead of the directions... look at the LAST PAGE which is BOLD HIGHLIGHTED YELLOW saying, NOT to reuse the OEM mounting bolts as they are too long... and will puncture the core of the Radiator - I thought those bolts went in a little tough. Below are pics of my new $750 radiator with 2 new unengineered "vent" holes.

Ya, those holes you see behind the mounting brackets... not supposed to be there. icon_furious.gif

ALL THAT SAID... I need to get this thing back together by Wednesday this week in time to get tech'd and ready for NASA in Pueblo, CO on Friday. Does ANYONE have any idea how I can fix this? Or does anyone know of a good aluminum welder in the Denver area that might be able to help me?... and maybe on Sunday? I know all those things are a stretch, but I'm kind of desperate and will make it worth the time of anyone that can help.

Is there any possibility I could use some kind of high temp sealer on the longer bolt and put in back in place... essentially plugging the holes? No idea if that's even feasible, but I'm open to any ideas.

Thanks in advance and hopefully once I get this stuff done I can catch up with everyone a bit.

Cheers JR

hope this helps brother. Get the holes welded up and shorter bolts and I would think it would be just fine.

Ouch... I will say GREAT attitude on the deal..

Any decent radiator shop can fix that, Aluminum radiators are common place these days. If that fails, try a local welder that does TIG.

And if that fails, PM me, i'll make a call to a Denver local that works / owns / partners in a motorcycle speed shop and supplier. Im sure he will know of a local shop that deals in aluminum radiator repair.

i wouldnt try sealing it. its possible but i dont think youd get through a race with it.

You don't think he should seal the two holes in his radiator? So your suggestion is he leave them open and allow coolant to run out the holes?

Im sure that's not what you mean,,, but not sealing the holes does not seem like much of an option.

Or are you referring to sealing them with a patch product like JB weld? If so, I agree

Skip the JB weld, if you have time to fix it get it done right, any radiator shop should be able to help you out. I'd fix it for you but I aluminum weld like $hit, it won't leak but look like hell, LOL.

So what other critical part you installed are you worried about? Any other important instructions you skipped? Sure you want to go on the track with a car you put together yourself? Hm?

:hysterical:

At least I have an excuse! !! For my F-ups LOL! !!! I would have flip and smash something. I just smashed my 1yr laptop it still works but the screen is crushed. I have to use an external monitor.

My gun jammed at PD training and could not clear it. I ended up throwing my gun the target. We NYPD were the talk of the gun magazines. The dept had to mess with the triggers of the Sigs & flocks. Also were made fun of for are bullets.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone and their offers of help! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I DID end up finding a place that following Monday morning that a colleague suggested. They were like 10 blocks from my work. I walked it in and showed them what I had and the genius he handed it too had it fixed in literally about 3 minutes. And he didn't even take the brackets off. He was able to get a welder in that tiny little clearance and fill the holes. Brilliant! AND they wouldn't even take my money! BTW - the place is called Scherer Metals in Denver. GREAT Folks! Been around for like 115 years or something crazy like that!

Yes, I do all my work myself. And I do pretty damn well, with no training or experience outside of my own garage. Since you threw in the laughing guy at the end, I'll assume you were just razzing me... But I'd rather go on track with stuff I've installed than trust anyone else to do it.

You threw a weapon on the range? Fired ? Days Off ?

Days off never !! Most if not all know me as a madman and use write fellow cops names on my bullets. After 14yrs got a free pass to stay home on the crazy bill !! But in reality the sigs would end up rusting in humidity. It's kind of hard to get fired from NYPD. LOL

Worked hard to get the taxpayers to retire you - got nothing for you - If you had my name on one of your bullets we would have a real problem! Just my $.02 from a NJ Know It All and that's all I have to say on this. :burnout:

Kinda strange your sig rusted, I had a P220 45 acp carried it in all kinds of weather it never rusted, but then again I respected my weapon and took care of it.
