Upgraded Coil Packs for SGT - Are they worth the upgrade?

Recommended Posts

I was looking at a couple of basic upgrades for my SGT as part of my weekend projects, and I was wondering if anyone has used upgraded Coil Packs on their SGT?

Here is one from American Muscle that I found made by Accel:

They also have a set made by Ford Racing:

Do these help any or are they a waste of money? Are they any better than what came on our SGTs? (I don't think these were changed at all from stock Mustang GT parts by SAI when our vehicle were upfitted in Las Vegas, but not 100% sure.)

Thanks,

Andy.

IMO, spark is spark unless you are getting in to super high powered engines. That doesn't stop me from buying the pretty new shiny crap, but I don't think you see any performance increases on "normal" engines at all.

Some of them claim MPG increases....any truth there? I'm sure all of you bought your Shelby (GT or 500) for the gas mileage, too!

Just curious if there is any truth in this stuff.....

thanks,

Andy.

it is possible but the increase wouldn't be enough to warrant the price, theyr just too expensive.

any time you increase combustion chamber efficiency you increase overall efficiency as it takes less fuel to make more power resulting in a decrease in fuel consumption. you'd get a better return fuel wise from an aluminum/carbonfiber driveshaft.

Thanks for the advise...that is one item on my short list anyway. I'd rather spend the money for the aluminum driveshaft.

I think I'll go for the 93 octane tune ASAP.

Any suggestions there?

I don't have my own tuner, but there is a local shop (Injected Engineering) that could do the tune for me and dyno if I wanted. Should I just buy a tuner and use a preset tune to save the $$?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm looking for some additional power for low $$ for now is my main goal. Funds are limited due to 4 tuition bills so I'm looking for bang for the buck!!

Thanks,

Andy.

you can get a canned tune that will run fine. it wont produce maximum power but it will be safe and wont blowup your engine. for maximum output you have to have a dyno tune. remote tuning is good but its just not as good as having a car strapped down to a dyno and making pulls under controlled conditions.

that being said if your short on cash i recommend a remote tune as dyno time is money. around tulsa its about 400 dollars to dyno tune a supercharged mustang. that doesn't include the required tuner. i caint remember the amount but remote tunes are less. id look at jpc, lund or bamachips.
