New kind of Shelby experience

Recommended Posts

Been driving 40 years this year, never had this experience until tonight. Wife and I cruised up to Owensboro to the famous Moonlite BBQ. Excellent meal, great bbq pork, beef brisket, country ham....really enjoyed our dinner. Went out to the car and I opened the trunk to get a bottle of water out of the cooler, laid my keys down to re-arrange stuff in the trunk and.......yep, closed the trunk with the keys in it, spare keys in wife's purse......in trunk as well. I had hit the button and unlocked the doors, but the trunk was shut. Called AAA, they sent a guy to "unlock a car". He was thrilled to be working on a Shelby, took pics of the engine, ooohed and aaaahed over the signed dash plaque, mourned Mr. Shelby and 45 minutes later and one broken trunk board later, we got it open. Of course, without the keys, we couldn't lower the top so he and I (and I'm not a small guy at all) grappled around in there until we got the back seat out and finally forced the board the runs up against the back seat down hard enough he broke it and finally got a hold of my wife's purse and dug the keys out (no small accomplishment when it's out in the open). He was quick to put everything back together, apologized over and over and over for the damage and kept repeating "I can't believe I broke a Shelby." I'm not worried about the cardboard piece, I'm just thankful he didn't have to jerk the lock out of the trunk lid! Makes a great case for the push button panel on the door or an inside trunk release!

Where do you hide a key on your car? On my truck it's up under the edge of the bed, about halfway up to the front. I've also hidden one behind the license plate. Non-ignition keys, of course, but is there any place to hide a magnetic key holder (that I can get to without putting the car on a rack)?

Thanks!

Get a "T" key - it's just a flat key without all the electronic stuff. It will fit in your wallet as it is "flat". Some billfolds even have a place to store one in the paper bill area. It will not start the car because it doesn't have the electronics but it will at least open the static locks.

Of course this assumes your billfold is in the back pocket of your pants and those aren't locked in the trunk too.

Lessons learned...

I put a Silverhorse Racing trunk release button in my glove box just for that reason in my convertible. Of course if you lock the glove box you are still up the creek . You can put a hide-a-key magnetic holder under the back of the car underneath (plenty of places).

Mine has a trunk release button on the center console. Don't they all????

Well...Apparently NOT! <lol>

I keep my key hidden in my pocket. You could get a keypad from Ford Accessories (http://accessories.ford.com/) and mount it someplace other than the door. I saw a pic of one mounted in the opening of his quarter window scoop vent. They're pretty flat and can be mounted under the handle but they're not completely flat like a OEM one is.

I don't know what year yours is but here's the one for mine (2010): http://accessories.f...less-entry.html

EDIT: It looks like it's the same for a 2009 so I assume they're all able to use them: http://accessories.f...less-entry.html

Simple solution.

Go to Home Depot and give them your key. Tell them to cut you a replica. While it WILL NOT start the car, it will get you inside it !

Take that key and place it inside a magnetic: "hide a key". Place it somewhere under the car.

ALL of my cars have it.

+1. I installed the SHR in my center console.

  • 4 weeks later...

If you or a friend are AAA members, you can get a key card made up for free. It is about twice as thick as a credit card, but is the same size so it fits in your wallet. It has a plastic pop out key. I got one the last time I locked my keys in the trunk.
