svt13
Was wondering if the stock oil is any good in this car. Was thinking about switching to royal purple or amsoil. Which is better? Also are there any fluids besides the royal purple chiller to lower engine temperatures? Are oil lubricants useful at all with this car? Wondering since the tremec always has problems apparently though the T-56 going in this car seems to have fixed these problems bu tonly time will tell. SVT NAJA
svt13, Given that the 2013 5.8L is a new (or revised 5.4L) engine for Ford with unheard of performance, but little history, stick with the recommended Motorcraft lubricants specified in the owners manual for the duration of the warranty. You don't want to give Ford any excuse to not honor the factory warranty...
Duncan4169
Better oil is like higher octane gas can't see it voiding warranty I'm getting the dealer to put in mobile 1 right at PDI
Obiefox
My 12 GT500 used 5w50, which is expensive and very hard to find at most "auto" stores. Your two choices were pretty much Ford Motorcraft full Syn or Castrol Syntec. Both run about $9 a qt. IMO, Motorcraft Ford Racing filters and their Full Syn oils are high quality. Obiefox
5w50 for the 2012, yes that was the "standard". The 2013 could different, but it will probably be the same.
ChrisSD
Don't let the dealer change your oil unless you want 5w20 in your new GT500. Do it yourself.
svt13
Don't let the dealer change your oil unless you want 5w20 in your new GT500. Do it yourself. They should be putting the proper oil in the car themselves. If they put the wrong oil in then it will cause damage and they can give me a new car

ChrisSD
Oil changes have to be done by a certified tech doing them yourself can void warranty This is patently false. All you need to do is save the receipts for the oil and filter which is sufficient proof that you changed the oil. Sure, if you fill the oil to the top of the fill tube, or only fill 1 qt and the engine is damaged - that's different.

Duncan4169
You would be surprise these days on how easy it is to void your warranty. it most cases now the dealer is required to take and send picture and sample of fluids used when power train components fail. 71sixpack
You would be surprise these days on how easy it is to void your warranty. it most cases now the dealer is required to take and send picture and sample of fluids used when power train components fail. I have seen this mentioned before on other forums. Is there ANYONE that has had this done? All the folks that had their trannies repaired for 1st to 2nd grind were fluid samples taken? All the testing will show is the viscosity of the oil. Since the Motorcraft oil is reported to shear to high 30 to low 40 weight after a few thousand miles it seems a better oil will hold viscosity better and test fine. Actually, is there anyone that has had an engine fail at all? Joe
Danny C
Hey guys, As a past Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealer service manager I handled everything from everyday warranty repairs all the way through handling lemon law vehicles for Ford and every case is handle case by case but keep your products purchased as good or better than the factory recommended products. Oh yea KEEP EVERY RECEIPT if you do the service or not!!! If you dealers gives you any heat ask to speak to the dealers service field rep or engineer. If you stick with OEM parts and or a local Ford dealer service department you are in like Flynn... My personal Oil is Mobile

Should I let the dealer just change my oil or should I change to something like amsoil or royal purple? Also for the 2012 shelby's how often are you suppose to change your oil anyways? The "change oil" display was active when I started it Friday. It has been stored since November though, getting started about once a month or so. Oil was very dark and opaque which kinda surprised me. Joe
ChrisSD
If you absolutely beat the shit out of the car like I did I'd change in 5k. Normal use, 7500 as the manual states.

vanos
use the 5 / 50 full synth m craft specified oil. change more often if you are uncomfortable. ...remember the '13 5.8 takes 9.5 qts. do not use mo-bile uno. pleese: give a modicum of trust to all the ford powertrain engineers--sheesh! and in the '13 use the specific coolant -red- and change both engine & intercooler. bleed all the air out too! change more often if you are uncomfortable. yeah PLEASE don't use the cheap brake///clutch fluid - [ i own an '07 gt500 with zero clutch problems ] - i use only ate super blu in all my gm & ford vehicles' brakes/clutch fluids with absolutely ZERO problems & i change this too--- often. --->get it at tire rack dot com. purr-fect pedal [brake & clutch] feel all the time.... yeah change the diff & trans too...use specified m craft stuff. lol can any one say: HIGH AMBIENT HEAT? -- yeah that's what breaks oil / hoses / wiring etc. down --duh. Esp in summer/ deserts i always pop the hood after driving --so to reduce heat soak all of the engine components. ur shelby will thank you
devious_stang
according to the manual, 5W/50 full synthetic 8.5 qts, 9.5 qts if you have the track pack option.
Helix
IMO, Motorcraft Ford Racing filters and their Full Syn oils are high quality. Ford has always been picky about what they put the Motorcraft name on. I've always seen and heard that these are high quality and I wouldn't see why Motorcraft oil wouldn't be perfect for this car; Motorcraft oil holds it's viscosity with advanced surfactants that I would rely on any day. EDIT: spelling.
svt13
Given how no one has bitched about problems with the transmission who actually own the car, I'll just stick with the fully synthetic ford oil that comes with the car. It says it needs to be changed every 7500 miles I believe it was. Could have been 8000 too. I'm wondering when the car first is built I heard some people change after 1500 then 3000 then do every 7500/8000. I read this was to get the gunk out of the car that comes from the factory or something like that. Is this true?

In my 2010 GT500 I am on a schedule of an oil changes w/filter every 3000 miles. I realize that is extreme on the short end but I figure it is the cheapest insurance an engine can have. It's not like the kids can drive my car, I could easily see miles put on the odometer and then I'd just go kick their ass. For the 2 Cobra's I had (2001, and 2004 Mystic) and for my present 2010 GT500, I change my own oil in the driveway. The '13 I ordered I will do the same...might have to get a new receptacle for the oil though...not sure if the one I have will hold 8.5 qts. As for the tire rotation...in the owner's manual (in another thread), it says the tires are directional and they are also staggered, so, no rotation can be done - snip from the manual: Tire Rotation Note: Your Shelby GT500 tires (P265/40-19 front, P285/35-20 rear) are directional. Tire rotation is not recommended for directional tires.
