1st Oil Change

Recommended Posts

I will be getting the Shelby out of storage in the next couple weeks to get ready for the drive to Carlisle for the 50th Celebration. The car has 900miles on it and has not been driven since last October due to two shoulder surgeries. I have started It about once per month while sitting. I was planning on changing the original oil before the drive to Carlisle.

Should I change the oil or let it go to 3000 miles? If I change the oil what do you guys recommend using? I normally use Mobil One or similar synthetic for my other cars. Thanks,

Joe

I don't think Mobil 1 makes a 5W-50 that goes in our cars. Brand selection is very limited. I personally use Castrol Syntec. About the only other choices are Motorcraft and Red Line. It is totally up to you on whether or not to change it. If it were me i probably would just to get it out of the way for the upcoming season. You will probably get tons of opinions on this though. I think you will be fine either way.

the owners manual sez every 6 months or 7500 miles.

Hence the question. On my other Mustangs I drove them 3-4k a year so I would change the oil prior to putting the car away for the season (RI salts the roads pretty heavily). Generally I store the cars from November to May. On this car though I have had it about 8mos, I have only driven 900 miles with half that getting the car back home. I put it away in late October prior to our first snowfall on Halloween. Based on the 6mo interval the oil should be changed, but the mileage is pretty low. The reason for my confusion is engine break in. On my older cars (60's and 70's), when the engine is rebuilt the special break in lube goes in with the oil and after a good break in and couple hundred miles gets changed out to new oil. Do the new cars follow this same routine? Are there special break in oils put in at the factory? This is the first brand new Mustang I have purchased and since I plan on keeping it a while want to make sure I get it right. Thanks,

I mean really---why worry about a 70 buck oil change vis a vis a 50K car..Cmon--Im a firm believer that you need to get all those little metals piecse out of your engine soon afterwards--i did mine at 600 miles--and the oil filter was full of metal shavings. So get the oil changed, avoid warrnty issues by using the Ford product, which you can get from KMan for like 7.25 a qt plus the filter--and either change it yourself or bring it to a qualifed lube place--they charge me $20 and i give them the parts. If you go non-ford make sure they are certified for use in our cars--when i first got my car only Castrol had approval

+1......when was the car built?, How old is the oil now?? I usually change-out the factory oil at 1k miles no matter what, but with oil, you ask 10 people & you'll get 10 different answers.........

I agree it would be good change the oil now. I did it and used the Ford oil. This prevents and warranty issues. Not many make the 5W50. I don't trust my local ford dealer, so had my favorite GM dealer to service it. Just remember to save all service records/invoices. Oil is to cheap to risk things. Your car is worth all the good care you can give it

Probably change it myself. My local dealer is Tasca and I'm not sure who changes oil on Shelbys there. My old Mustang GT was serviced by the "every car" shop crew there. I know the Mod shop is very good but they don't do oil changes that I know of. Can't be much different than changing oil on any other Mustang anyway.

Yep, change it. The original has been in there for awhile. Mine was about 6months old when I bought it drove it home about 300 miles and I changed mine the very next day. Car has a little over 500 miles now and I will change at 1000. After that I plan on changing every 6 months. My rational it certainly wont hurt anything changing every 6 months. I plan on keeping it so in the big picture it's the cheapest single thing that will preserve the motor. It gives me piece of mind.

I brought my 2011 GT500 to my local Ford Dealer. Motorcraft 5W50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil and Motorcraft Oil Filter for $ 85.00. Last year, the GT500 had 777 miles on it when it had its first Oil Change and in April it had its second Oil Change. The Start of the Car Show season after it comes out of Hyberation.

+1 for changing it before the drive. I switched to Mobil1 0w40 for the 1,200-3000mi interval, and after that it's going to be Redline or Amsoil every 5K/6mo (a bit more aggressive schedule than the manual calls for). Not going to run MC oil again, for reasons discussed ad nauseum here: http://www.svtperformance.com/forums/shelby-gt500-150/787413-official-uoa-thread-oil-poll.html
