Shelby GT Valve Covers Installed

Recommended Posts

Received my Shelby GT 4.6L Valve/Cam Covers last week and installed them this weekend. Very impressed with the quality of the product and packaging. They appear to be original Ford covers and come with new bolts, grommets, and gaskets already in place. Installation is pretty smooth once you remove the battery, tray, and intake elbow. One hint: I put blue painter's masking tape on the covers to prevent scratching during the install, as you still have to slide them under some things such as the fuel lines.

The appearance is subtle, as there is a lot of black in the engine room. I actually like that, as they look "factory" and they are genuine SHELBY!

Nice!

How long did it take to do the R&R?

I SPENT about 2.5 hours, but that includes frequent breaks due to my bad back. Once I got the first one off, things went a lot faster, now that I had the right sockets picked out, etc. I imagine a real mechanic could do the whole thing in about an hour.

I like that the covers came from Shelby, are unique for the Shelby GT, and look like something that would/should have come on the car initially. I saved the invoice with the rest of the car's documentation. "Back in the day" nearly all real muscle cars came with some kind of special valve covers from the factory (chrome or whatever). Just didn't seem right to have dull, plain ones just like the regular Mustang

Looks GREAT! I bought my covers last month and just installed mine. The Black on Black compartment makes them a subtle change overall but once you see them next to the factory covers you can see the big difference. Happy with this appearance upgrade.

Looks Great; but I cannot believe you didn't take advantage of the Super deal on the caps and strut brace!

I was tempted about the caps, but I'm really trying for a "factory" look as it "coulda/woulda/shoulda" come originally. I'm afraid that many billet caps would give the engine compartment too much of a "custom" look. Although I like and admire the more customized style, it's just not what I'm going for at this time. For the same reason, I chose to leave the FRPP strut brace on as it is different from the regular GT and the Ford Racing plate matches the FR decal on the air intake shield. Would like to see a photo of one with the cap set installed, though.

they look great, congrats.....

I went with these a few years ago.....

Those look really great too. It was almost a coin toss for me. That's one reason I posted the pics, was to help others see what they actually look like on the car, so they can make a decision. I really envy your wheels and brakes. May be my next mod.

I like them, they look really good! I agree, they should have come on the car, along with another 100hp...LOL! Thanks for the pics! That's another reason I like going to car shows, you can see what others have done and if it still looks as good on the car as it did in your head. I've seen things that didn't look nearly as good on the car as I thought they would....especially wheels!

You have any pics? I would like to see how the black covers look in a black compartment. Rick

Micheal's custom covers gave me an idea, which is still a work in progress:

Purchased used set of cam covers

Lots of polishing but not the outcome I want plus surface waving/imperfections

Picture of untouched cover & the one I started (since sanded down)

camcoverspolishinprogress.jpg

So I had to sand the cover down

A local polisher shared some of his knowledge & hooked me up with better compounds

Now to find some hours for polishing to see if it will pop with a bright shine like I'm used to getting

Then to the engraver

Hopefully someday I will get these finished

  • 7 months later...

Hey all - I got a set of the polished covers for Christmas! Reading the above, it appears that the install is not too difficult. I was afraid it might be necessary to remove plugs, injectors, etc.

So, my only question is, would it be advisable to have new valve cover gaskets on hand?

Rick thanks. The SPP site does not state that gaskets are included, so I didn't expect to find them in the box. I'll call my dealer perhaps.
