Changing gears back to stock

68flashback

Recommended Posts

When I bought the car it had been changed over to 3.73 gears. I have the stock gears and want to change them back. Called my SVT dealer and he quoted me just under $700 to do the swap. Does this sound about right to you folks? I didn't expect it to be that much..............

Thanks

Gregg

Should be able to get it done between $200-$300. If you don't have any local performance shops which you trust to do it, then that maybe what your local Ford service is charging, but that is pretty darn high. My buddy at the local Ford dealer here does them for $200+ parts, but that is for his labor after hours. Their normal shop price is still under $400. Any transmission type shop can also do it, if you have one around you like.

Why, may I ask, do you want to switch back to the 3.31's???

I plan to drive the car on the highway quite a bit - at cruising speed on 400 series highways in Canada - 130 kmph - the car revs at about 2600 rpm. That's working a bit hard, and is fairly noisy given the exhaust on it. I don't plan to drag race the car so hole shots aren't that important to me. It still will have 555 rwhp so acceleration fun will still be there.

I am in a similar situation, but I never changed my original stock 3.31 gears from the beginning. Thought I about it though. For high speed highway cruising, you will appreciate the switch back to stock gearing. Our engines don't need those kinds of rpm's for 80 mph cruising that's for sure. Good luck and enjoy.

Well..................... I may have had a change of heart. Don't think we'll be taking the car to the lake more than a couple of times. Lots of miles, not as much room to carry stuff and my cottage road is gravel not kept in the best of shape. I am going to take the stock parts into the dealer to have them looked at to make sure they're in good enough shape to consider the switch first.

My 3:73 gears are great on the highway...In 6TH GEAR at 130kms my revs are at 2200rpm....In 5TH GEAR at 120 rpm revs at 2600rmp...Great for sweet spot passing....1/4 mile goes thru traps in 4TH GEAR at 5800rpm at 118mph...3:31 gears are not good for these cars for starting in 1ST or hitting the sweet spot....fast enough...My speedo is still off cause of 3:73 BUT SHE RESPONES......

I have 373s and love em but the RPMs are up just a little, My gas mileage issue is the Super Charger not the gears :)! The quote seems high to do the swap.

Whoa! I never thought of the speedo being off! How can I tell if it was adjusted? I guess I could have someone follow me and check it out. What's involved with changing it?

My '07 has the stock 3.31 while my '09 KR has the 3.73 (stock on the KR). I had a good opportunity to compare the 2 when my dad and I drove both cars from Ottawa to Quebec City last fall (roughly 500 km) and switched cars back and forth along the way. At 120km/h in 6th gear, the difference in RPM is not that significant (roughly 300 RPM). Gas milage was a bit better with the '07 (around $2,00 less for a full thank, which is less than 2 liters for a 425km portion of our trip). In other words, noting significant enough in my opinion to warrant the cost and hassle of switching back to 3.31.

Most non factory nav systems show your speed on the map feature if you want to check how accurate your speedo is try a nav display.

I switched my gears from 3.31 to 3.73. I ran with this configuration for a couple of years, but the revs were too high on the interstate. I changed to a 3.55 rear end and am very happy with it. The tuner can correct the speedometer for any of the rear end ratios. With the 3.55 rear end I cruise at 72 mph at 2200 rpm.

tomhoulihan..what gear are you in at that speed and rpm??????..

also ...What do you consider too high rpm on the highway?????2600rpm in 5th.(3:73),,is my favourite combo for performance on highway running...I have to drive to fast(speed wise) to keep the rpm above 2000 rpm in 6th gear,,,,

Using 3.31 gears at 80 mph I get 2050 rpm's on my 08 GT500 in 6th. I don't look for blinding acceleration when rolling on the Interstate. I often hear people say that 6th gear with 3.31 is useless. I on the other hand find it very useful at 80+ mph speeds. For anyone looking for effortless cruising at 80 + mph with low stress and decent gas mileage 3.31 gear are great.

Got the GPS out today. At 120 kmph in sixth I am at about 2,250 rpm with the 373's. So right about the same as YZD - at least I know my speedo was adjusted right.

Think I'm going to leave it for now. My wife was out with me the other night and she said she likes the sound at highway speed! God I love that woman..................

I am getting quite a bit of road/tire noise from the rear end at that speed - more than the engine. Is this normal? I've been told my tires are well worn back there - would new ones help?

Thanks to all for your help on this!

I just replaced my 2yr old nitto's 555's(lots of drag strip) amd my rear end noise went away except for a little gear noise....Track use on these tires kills them for highway running....

The only reasin I would want to change the rear ghear is to save the clutch. Havint 3.31's is hard on the clutch when drivi9ng around town which most of us do. Clutch gets hot quickly than starts to chatter. Ford should have figured this out. and went with a different rear geat and a different 6th gear ratio to compinsate for it.

+1.. with 3.31's 6th is useless.. if you go up a hill it's causing the engine to work too hard and you're getting worse gas mileage I think. I just swapped to 3.73 and 6th is MUCH better for cruising now.

I agree with the uphill battle in 6th. I shift to 5th and power through the hill as needed. I don't mind the down shift.
