If you have the SYNC Nav Unit in multiple vehicles does this work on multiple units? Or just the unit it was purchased for? Have a 2009 F-150 with the Sync Nav Unit and a 2011 GT500 other HD radio in the GT500 NO major differences.

I have gone to the ordering website and emailed Ford 3 questions:

(1) What exactly is "Gracenotes"?

(2) What does "Application Number" [in the online ordering process] mean?

(3) Does this $199 package update apply to the 2011 GT500 SYNC system?

Will pass along any response that I get.

This is my understanding:

  1. http://www.gracenote.com/

  2. Usually you find that under Menu then System..yours may be different. It's the software application version your head unit is running

  3. Sync has nothing to do with the Nav Maps BUT the maps must be compatible with the version of the software which is mated to the version of Sync. All this is different if you also have My Ford Touch then there is an update for all of the above and a different process, USB, SD Card, etc.

OK, Ford just emailed me back and said:

Thank you for contacting NAVTEQ Maps. The latest disc for your 2011 Ford Mustang will be version 5.1X which will be released April 2012. This can be pre-orderedonline by visiting our web store at http://www.navteq.com/store.

To obtain your application number, press the Information ("I") Button located in your vehicle and then select "System Info".

The Gracenotes update is the database that will load the name and title of the CD you are listening to.

Thanks, I looked at the PDF's regarding the Clarion info not sure if it's worth it at this time. It doesn't look like it adds more APPS or enhances the APPS on the system, just adds more road coverage with more points of intrest and Gracenote Album covers....What does anyone else think?

Well I bought last years and it was only two discs. They say discs 3 & 4 are software updates. I ordered it so I will report back on what it all ends up being, but I would tend to think that it is not going to be anything too earth shattering as far as apps go. I think it also said something about changing traffic alert carriers if I read it right, which hopefully will be an improvement.

Gracenote - is the sony owned technology/database that will tellyou what cd you have in the CD player. No 2 recored CDs are alike. The number of tracks, and the length of each track tell the software what CD (band and track names) you have just put into the cd player.

iTunes, windows media player, etc all use it, it is just seamless if you are connected to the internet. Sony purchased Gracenote in 2008. BUT, many other companies use the technology.

Still would like to know if you can use it in the 2 different vehicle with basically the same system.

I don't see any reason why you can't BUT the Nav DVD MUST be in the vehicle when operating so one would always be without. Might be better to leave the old one in one of the two rather than deal with the back and forth.

The NAV DVD does not need to be in the car. These are update DVD's so they update the NAV data on your radios hard drive. Bought these when the 3.1x Nav update came out. The process approximately 3 hours as I recall last time. Then you remove the DVDs and that's the last time you use it. I think you need to buy one for each car since the activation code and I believe the application code are unique to each vehicle, so one could not just run up and down a dealer lot installing these updates to 10 different Shelby's. Software licensing my friends....they get us every time.

Jeff,

My understanding is that you will load/reinstall the navmaps and gracenote to the location already on the internal harddrive and once you install the sofeware, you will have no need for the disks unless the system gets wiped clean.

In the new systems (My Ford Touch) it is my understanding that they have an SD card slot for updating. But because we have the first gen(???) of the new Ford Navsystem, they cannot update it throught the usb port, but only a CDROM. Think of updating a computer that is not attached to the internet.

I talked with my Service Manager, he seems to think it might work for multiple systems. Think buying software and installing in on more than one computer.

The dealer may be able to get a disc set with multiple licenses to do updates but I would be shocked if you can do it with two personal vehicles. The fact that you have to enter a number from your vehicle and then get an activation number tells me that the software would catch the fact that you are trying to do an unauthorized install just like they do with computer software.....there is no way Ford would miss out on charging you twice as much so you can update two cars....but I am sure someone will try soon enough and we will hear about whether you can be sneaky or not ;)

Hasnt arrived yet or been shipped even. The website doesn't say it is a pre-order, but they tell you that afterwards. Should be shipping by end of the month they said. I will keep you posted.

I attempted the upgrade on my wifes 2010 GT. The first two software discs loaded without a hitch. When I attempted to install map disc 1 it prompted me for the activation code at the HHD updated stage, the activation number I was given comes up "invalid". Tried calling them but they're closed. Sent an email and now I wait for a new activation code. Arrrggghhh!!!

That sucks....I did get an email that they were having a problem with the codes and would be sending new ones. Did you notice anything earth shattering as far as new features in the software update?

Have Order one Disk myself. They have sent new activation codes and called to see what was going on. Navteq claims to have had an issue with the activation codes. Claims that they have held up shipping until 30 APR. See what happens. I’ll also let you know if it works on another vehicle.

I haven't had a chance to play around with it.

Turns out I had a couple of the letters from the application number switched on the order. Opps!! They're emailing me out a new code within the next couple of days.

Received my 4 disc pack today. I completed the first two "Software Update" discs so far which took 3 minutes for disc 1 and 25 minutes for disc 2. I poked around in the menus and features briefly before starting on the map updates. I can't say that I see anything earth shattering that was worth upgrading at this time. I guess the channel mapping for Sirius was updated, but I only listen to a few stations so it is hard for me to tell if there was anything major there. Couple of the menu items look a little different to me throughout the head unit functions but again nothing exciting. Have the map updates running now which should take several hours according to the book. Will post an update if there is anything exciting or not there as well. If you don't feel like burning up multiple hours of gas idling (manual says to leave engine running so that the battery doesn't die during the update) I would suggest just turning the key to ACC and leave a battery tender hooked up to the battery like I am doing.

Will post with the map update results.

Shane

UPDATE: Nav Disc 1 load time approximately 2 hours, Nav Disc 2 about 1.5 hours.....I think there are some differences on the nav but I can't remember. It seems like some areas can now zoom closer in and the top down map now can be shown in heading up mode. I don't recall if it did that before or not (I seem to recall mine only showed north up before but I could be wrong). Some streets that weren't listed along popular routes for me are finally added.
