Independent Rear Suspension

Alcon,

Was curious, has anyone put an IRS in a GT-500?? Would love to know; a) how much it cost, and B) how much improvement.

Reason I ask, was watching a rerun of Top Gear last night (BBC America), and they showed them testing a GT-500. Hammond mentions about how the rear axle is old school, straight line stuff, etc. I know he's a Porsche fanatic, and all that. They ran the GT-500 round the track, and then bought in a Rousch, which apparently has an IRS, and it was about 2 second quicker.

Just curious.

Chris

Correct, the Roush does not have IRS. Probably was faster due to the less power. If you don't know how to manage the power, then you will hook up much better with less. With the less power of the Roush in this test, better tires, and better bushings, etc, of course it will be faster on the track. I always hate the argument over IRS on the Mustang. A properly set up stick rear can handle the track as well as IRS. Better in some areas of the corners, worse in others. With a perfectly smooth track, I'll take the stick axle over the IRS. You get into bumps on the track in the corners, and other odd characteristics of other corners, I'd take the IRS. This will be argued for eternity. Watch a Grand-Am Continental Challenge Race and compare properly set up Mustang stick axle to BMW IRS and see what the difference really is. Pretty much equal.

There is a discussion about former plans to produce an IRS for the current Mustang here:

But nothing ever came of it.

The current Mustang was orginally desinged with an IRS in mind and there are rumors that the next generation Mustang, while having an entirely different body, may share many of the same suspension pick-up points -- possibly enabling a retrofit. But just one small difference in the design could make this extremely difficult, so no one should count on it.

I wouldn't put to much merit in what Top Gear says. They should be watched for entertainment only. They're the same ones that reported the GT500 didn't make 500 HP. They were running the car on the dyno and did not take parasitic loss into consideration.

The Roush ate the GT500 because it had a full boat suspension kit on it. The stock 07 GT500 is widely known for not handling all that well.

Bag the IRS idea as nothing perform or will be a cost effective as this:

There ya go guys its been done ford designed it carrol shelby tested it but the stick axle was cheaper, lighter and performed just as well on the track. Just as MY500ss said the cars with alot of power like most of us have (600 and up at the wheels) just brake parts. sure IRS feels better on the street, over the potholes, but it sure as hell doesnt perform llike my stick axle with the griggs setup on willow springs.
