Interesting thread here. Great video. I have a KR and would like to upgrade the HP. What is tvs talked about. Who can do the mods in Texas? Close to Houston and San Antonio. 2 hours from both. Thanks

Don

Don, as Cali KR responded in the tune thread, call Tousley ford. You don't need someone to do the mods. If you can change a tire, you can swap the s/c yourself. It is very simple, the equivalent of changing a tire in skills required and will take 20 minutes. But take your time. And it will take an hour. Use a camera to document each vacuum line so don't get them crossed.

You don't need the ProCal tune that Ford sells with the TVS on your KR. Provided, of course, your KR tune is stock. The TVS as a plug and play will work fine. If your tune is not the stock KR tune (if you are not the original owner), or you are not sure if it is stock, then get the ProCal tune and take out all the guess work. I think its $400 or so more. Well worth the peace of mind.

In addition, getting the ProCal tune will give you the emissions number (EO #), for smog certification, making your car 50 state legal for emissions. The car, without the ProCal tune, will pass the actual emissions test with the sensors in the tailpipe. BUT.....at least in the state of CA where I live, a smog check involves both the actual test and a visual test. Chances of getting a smog guy that knows what is stock and what isn't on the KR is small. He'd see that, "Ford Racing", plaque on the TVS and think it is stock....more than likely. But if you got that one guy in 1000 that knows KR's, and he knew the TVS wasn't stock, he'd want to see that EO#. If you don't have it, car is undriveable until you get it. Again, the chances of getting that one smog guy that knows KR's is small, but it takes out the worry!

Your KR will run fine without the ProCal tune and the TVS. But, "technically", wouldn't be 50 state legal for a complete and thorough emissions check. The ProCal tune therefore does two things: resets a tune to factory settings and makes it 50 state legal for emissions.

If you elect to tune the car with the TVS install, the ProCal tune, a FORD factory tune......NOT....and aftermarket tune, IMHO, is the only way to go. Car will run factory under all temp, air pressure, humidity, conditions.

The ProCal tune is very similar to the stock KR tune. It does some little things to make it more aggressive, like upping the RPM limiter, the torque limiter, advance the spark a degree etc. Little things. But otherwise your factory KR tune is very similar to the ProCal tune.
