JBA Equal Length Shorty Headers

Recommended Posts

Has anyone added the JBA equal length shorty headers as opposed to long tubes? The reason I ask is they claim HP and Torque increases and they still meet smog requirements. Anyone have any results positive or negative?

Pros:

- easier install ...especially drivers side

- generally no steering shaft clearance issues

- easier to retain all 4 O2s than with LTs (and passabel in CA)

- a bit quieter than LTs (tho that can be a con -lol)

- cheaper

Cons:

- less power potential

- less power potential

- less power potential

- less power potential

- less power potential

;)

What I've read over the years is that shorty headers look good, sound a little deeper, throaty sound, very little HP gain if any. I've got a set of Ford Racing ceramic shorties sitting in the garage now for a couple years, I'm going to put them on this winter.

I can only say from what I have read the JBA equal length shorty headers are supposed to be a cross between shorties (with little power gain) and long tubes. The equal length shorties look like a plate of spaghetti with all the tubes bent. And as stated they do increase power and maintain emissions. Does anyone have any experience with these? I know they are offered through the Shelby catalog and so of course could be installed by Shelby. Or any DIYer.

I wish I knew how to post or attach a photo of the JBA shorty equal length headers. They are very different than the shorties from Pypes and others.

These look anything like the one's that you're referring to?

I put a set of BBK equal length shorty headers on my car that is FI and I dyno'd before and after.

RPM w/o headers shorty headers

2500 176 hp 370trq --202 hp 394 tq

3000 223 hp 389 trq -232 hp 406

3500 264 hp 397 trq - 276 hp 414

4000 307 hp 403 trq - 318 hp 417

4500 344 hp 402 trq -356 hp 415

5000 382 hp 402 trq -395 hp 415

5500 410 hp 391 trq - 423 hp 403

6000 422 hp 369 trq -434 hp 380

6500 424 hp 348 trq -435 hp 355

Hope this helps. Since then I have gone with longtube headers but I have not dyno'd the car with them.

I have the BBK shortie tuned length headers they sound nice!!!

But unless your going racing every weekend or cruising at light speed they are a choice of money being spent on which one.

Shorties bolt right up to your exhaust no extra work needed

Long tube headers Pro's

Yes you will gain more hp

Yes you will sound nicer

You will be the bad boy of the block

Con's

You will spend more money on the headers

You will have to buy more exhaust mods to fit headers

You have to make mods to your steering column shaft

The big one is with all that noise and hp you will draw every cop up your butt

My Pro is no cop up my butt either way and have money left over for a cigar and a nice steak :sing_rain:

Thank you for posting the photo of the JBA headers and yes that is the headers which I referred. And thank you for the numbers posted from the dyno. The numbers are impressive. One difference I noted in the photos between JBA and BBK is that the JBA's have a D shaped opening while the BBK are O shaped. Dont know which is better but thank you for the information. Again, the equal length shorty headers appear to be a compromise between shorty headers and long tube headers with the advanatage of being able to pass emissions. Curious if it would be necessary to have a dyno tune if these were installed on a stock engine???

Either one won't be a big gain and the better an engine breaths the better in runs. In combination with other mods is where it would come into play. Since installing my new intake manifold my stang sounds and is crisp to the throttle.

The exhaust ports are "D" shaped, even the OEM cast manifolds are "D" shaped

Then I would think there would be a smoother transition flow with the JBA's D shaped ports rather than the BBK round port headers. Racer: did your BBK's have O shaped ports as indicated by the photos?
