Bald Rear Tires

Recommended Posts

After 10 000 miles of enjoyment my stock tires have somehow ended up bald. Wanting to be responsible I was wondering what the max tire size for the rears is on the stock rim without rubbing issues or spacers..

Anyone with similar difficulties feel free to share.

255/45R18 is the widest recommended for the stock rims... Some guys have gone as wide as a 275 series tire... But there is a lot of sidewall "flex" if you do any Open Track driving...

Edit = Assuming you are talking about 8.5" wide rims on a SGT...

Wow, I must drive like a little old lady. I've got 16,000 miles on my original Goodyears F1's and they still have 7/32's on the fronts and 5/32's on the rears (LOL). However I'm still replacing the original tires this week before the winter weather sets in. Mine is a daily driver and they're not kidding about driving them in under 40 degrees weather. The few days we had colder weather last winter were scary before the tires were warmed up. In normal driving the tires would hop and lose traction when going around a corner if you weren't careful.

I'm replacing them with Continental Extreme Contacts DW's which have nearly the same dry handling qualities and are rated much better in the wet. My local Ford dealer is actually price matching a quote I got from Tire Rack online plus I had a hundred dollar online discount coupon. I haven't tracked my car or been to the drag-strip to really abuse the tires. I usually leave the T/C on and have yet to do a burnout but do enjoy enjoy breaking them loose in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears occasionally.

Depending on the tires you chose, you may want to see if your local Ford dealer can price match and order you a set.

The OE BFGs on my 2007 are the worst tires I've ever owned for traction. I only ever drive it in the dry, never seen rain. Although i did get caught out on a wet street a few weeks ago. I nearly looped it going around a corner.

Traction is poor enough that I consider it unsafe. I'll be going to something different once these are gone - probably P-Zeros.

The rears are wearing noticeable faster than the fronts. I notice the TCS allows a small amount of wheelspin. Apparently that and the crummy tires is enough to accelerate the wear.

My only problem is I have a full set of OE BFG stickers in storage to replace these

Wow! I wonder if there's just something wrong with the set you got :headscratch:

I've been pretty happy with the BFG's.....the original set lasted 3X,XXX miles(execpt for the insides of the fronts due to camber)

and Mine's a daily driver in all weather. No problems with traction while street driving.

It's possible I'm not being fair on the wear. The fronts are probably original with 20K miles and lots of tread left.

If I still had the original rears I'm sure they would be bald. Both have been changed due to flats. And I seriously don't spin the tires on this car, except for the occasional slippage allowed by the TCS.

But the traction issue is real. The front end washes out way too easily, and the ABS takes over quicker than it should (due to lockup)

Maybe it would do better on a clean racetrack and hot tires, but I doubt it would.
