richstang
My local dealer mentioned a new color was due to arrive shortly called "Sonic Blue" for the Mustang and the GT500. She pulled out the current brochure and it confirmed her comment with a note stating late avail. Anyone have any insight on this happening or pictures. (I'm guessing it's the same color that was previously available a few yews back.)
txcobra
Man,sonic blue was one of my favorite colors ever! It was awesome on the 03 Cobra and lightning! Can't wait to see that!
EL SHELBY
Ford's supply of the Kona Blue was cut off following the tsunami in Japan. To make up for the loss Ford reported they would bring back the Sonic Blue once the stock of Kona Blue paint was below a specific point. My quess is you would have to know someone inside Ford to know when and if Sonic Blue would actually make a return. A 2012 in Sonic Blue could a very rare, and damn good looking Mustang. Check it! Thanks for that link. That article is dated May 10, 2011. I wonder if any further news or info is out there. (I gotta see some pics of a '12 GT500 in this color!) A 2012 Sonic Blue GT500 vert would look great in my garage. I heard the Sonic Blue Ford GT was slipped through the system (perhaps by Pardo?). When discovered by the execs it was ordered to be raffled/auctioned off for charity (with a slap on the wrist of the person who ordered it.) Tejas500
Interesting info. My 2012 is supposed t be completely repainted by Ford due to a manufacturing error. I wonder how they plan to do that in a month when they don't have supply of that color??? Maybe it will now be a Sonic Blue???
ShelbyEra08
heard the color Lava Red is going to be rare because the color was made in Japan but was halted because of the tsunami

metal_driver
Thanks for the news and the link. I have always been a fan of blue cars and I would have to say I like the looks of the Sonic Blue. Looks like this one is on its way in.
John Canfield
Yellow Blaze is also going away for the same reason. If you pick up the latest printing of the Mustang brochure, you will see Sonic Blue listed, and the 'limited availablilty' shown for KB, LR, and YB. I'd like to see a SB Boss 302, should be rare and cool looking as well as being closer to the blue originally available on the '69 Bosses.
ShelbyEra08
just curious, why is the paint going to be limited, shouldnt Ford have the paint codes. Why couldnt they get another plant to make it? Or was Japan the cheapest option?

So far I've only found a few bits of info but, it seems these newer colors have a special metalflake pigment that refracts lights with slight color shifts and is only sourced from Japan. Personally I think the Sonic blue would be a big hit if more people were aware of it's availability. I've been searching but have yet to find one picture. The Boss 302, GT500, GTCS, would all stand out very well with their unique graphics and the Sonic Blue paint.

cheftjpeck
I love sonic blue... My 05 mustang gt was sonic blue.. I would've had my 08 gt500 in that color instead of the vista blue if it was available.. Hopefully it will be an option for the 2013 gt500

This is true... Tuxcedo Black also has the different colored flakes in it and is another one of the colors no longer available from Ford. I have it on my 2011 F-150 4x4 King Ranch and it's amazing to look at in the sunlight. The metal flakes change color as you move and they "mix" rather than all go to one color like the Dupont paint does. As for the late available Sonic Blue GT500's, the 2012 Order Bank was closed about 4 weeks back (according to my SVT sales Mgr.) so unless they were already painted that color, you won't be able to order one. And not just me, I wanted to confirm what was reported here in another thread by a TS member and it was confirmed. I asked when the 2013 Order Bank was going to open and the Sales Rep was busy with a customer but kind of "hmmmm'd" and "huhhhhhh'd" indicating she knew the date but couldn't remember. I didn't stick around so I can't report that date.....yet. I'd think it will be AFTER the LA Auto show in November though, where the new 2013 GT500 is set to debut. I doubt VERY much that Ford would show its hand before it shows the car. Phill Pollard

I hope the 2013 has the sonic blue option and the restyled back end is an improrvement, even if slight. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
John Canfield
It's October 2011 and Ford is telling you they closed 2012 orders! What's wrong with this picture? Look at how early the 2012 Mustangs hit, it doesn't surprise me. No telling how long of a model production run those and the 2014s will get anticipating a major redo for the 2015s, as opposed to the minor refresh that the '13/14s are scheduled for. Good thing there are actually laws governing how early a model year car coudl be released, otherwise we might be seeing 2015s next week!

VitoScilla
^^Not sure how low 2012 production will be? As an FYI - 2011 Order Bank was closed 10/10 and 5100 (950 verts and 4150 coupes) were produced including "pre-production" pieces. Curious to know 2012 breakdown..although I suspect it will be lower as a result of 2013's expected changes. ~Vito
2010KonaBlueGT
It tells me that 2012 will be a low production year run That was my thinking too. I made a comment to the Sales Rep. I bought my 2010 from that up to now, the 2010 MY is the lowest production year for the GT500 and she confirmed it. I think 2012 will be lower. Not by much, but lower. richstang
Thanks for everyone's input here. I've been searching the web for any 2012 Mustangs in Sonic Blue and still keep coming up empty. I read on one site Sonic Blue was available for ordering in late July / Early August. From what's been posted here on closing orders that's about a 2 month window for production. In the back of my mind I'm wondering if they ever produced any of them in SB.
