Mustang Heaven...

I believe that I have died and gone to Mustang Heaven. I was one of those guys who ordered a 2007 SGT and then waited months and months to have it delivered; checking the car’s progress every day via the VIN and commiserating with other folks on the forum prior to Team Shelby (forgot the name now). I installed the Whipple 550 and transformed the well mannered Shelby into a wild beast a year or so ago. I love the car and it will never be sold while I am still above ground. Interestingly, I ordered a 2012 Boss 302 the same month four years later (March) and received it the same calendar month (September) as I did the SGT and went through the same agonizing wait. Well while my first love is the SGT, the Boss 302 is the most awesome car I have ever driven bar none. The balance of the car is incredible and the kudos writers have been giving it are very well deserved. Note the November issue of MT where the Boss 302 ends up ranking fifth out of eleven cars in the Best Driver’s Car contest finishing ahead of the Corvette Z06 and Audi R8 GT. I am one lucky SOB to own one of the most beautiful Mustangs ever built and one of the overall best Mustangs ever built. Life at 69 is very, very good.

Is there a big difference in the Laguna Seca Boss 302 and the base model?

MT tested the Laguna Seca and that is the only one I keep reading about, but I need a back seat and may be interested in the base model.

I would be interested to hear your opinion since you own one rather than a tester in a magazine.

Sjohnson - Good question. I really did not have a choice between ordering the base Boss or the Laguna Seca since the dealer I found (in another state) only had an allocation for the base car. Back in February and March it was difficult to find these cars on the ground without ADM, which I was not going to pay. Of course the Laguna Seca cost more as well, which put it out of my range even if I could have found one for sticker. The Laguna Seca comes standard with a Torsen differential and Recaro seats, which are optional on the base car. The Laguna also has a performance gauge package and rear seat delete. The base car has 19x9” and 19.5” wheels whereas the Laguna has 19x9” and 19x10” wheels with R-compound tires. The Laguna Seca has a front brake cooling kit installed whereas has to be installed by you with the base Boss. There are some body accent and aerodynamics differences. They have tweaked the suspension of the Laguna as well. However, the drivelines in the two models are identical. Basically the differences in the Laguna Seca over the base Boss is enhanced track capabilities. Plus, it is a limited edition of a limited edition so perhaps down the road it will hold its value better than the base car. For me personally the base Boss 302 is precisely what I hoped for and I have no regrets for not finding a Laguna Seca model and forking over the additional cash. Any Mustang guy or gal is going to fall in love with a base Boss 302.

The Boss 302 (4-seater) is the best performing Mustang I've ever owned, until I bought the LS. The Laguna Seca handles noticeably better and is more stable at higher speeds.
