Shelby Driving Class

Hello y'all,

I'm interested in learning how to drive my car properly and wanted any suggestions on a Shelby driving training class if available.

I live in Los Angeles but don't mind traveling to learn.

Thanks,

KG

Bondurant in Phoenix. Yeah, OK, he uses Corvettes now. Take the 4 day class with the day in the Formula Mazdas. I'm considering taking the Ford GT down for a two day class. First 1.5 days in the Mazdas and last 1/2 day with the GT. They will allow but don't recommend using your own car for the whole thing. I went through a set of tires on the Vette I drove in the 3 days I drove it.

Another is the Miller Motorsports school in Salt Lake. They do use Mustangs. I haven't done it so don't know how it compares.

Hi

A couple of suggestions -

1. Miller Motorsports Ford Racing School of High performance Driving - http://www.millermot...ing-school.html You get schooled in a Mustang

2. Norcal SAAC Fall Classic at Thunderhill - http://www.norcal-sa...news/1110th.htm - Bring your car, no charge for instruction to registered participants.

Watch this forum for a possible TS driving school event next year.

Regards,

MM

Miller Motorsports Park!!! I just went for a free day of instruction that came with the purchase of my Boss 302. The facility is unbelievable. It was made by a self made billionaire and it shows. Ford has extensive ties with them and they use FR500 Mustangs. Well, we used Boss 302's provided by Ford but the FR's are the cars they use regularly. Oh yeah, they have a $50 million Shelby collection!

Go to LASAAC.org (Los Angeles Shelby American Automobile Club) our meetings are the third Tuesday of the month in West Los Angeles. We have open tracks, local cruises, car show, holiday party to raise $ for charity. We have over 20 years experience teaching driver's to safely drive their performance cars at speed in a safe environment, Willow Springs.

Cobra Club is running a open track at Willow Springs last week end in October (2 days for $200.00) and LASAAC is organizing an exhibition group during the VARA Big Bore Bash at Willow Springs the folowing week end (experienced drivers only for that event).

Show up to these events and talk to people, watch how its done and you will be hooked!

The difference between an open track day and a 3 or 4 day class at Bondurant or Miller is you get personal instruction and practice. On a two day open track you'll be going around the track, but with 4 days of instruction you learn techniques that you don't get without lots of practice. Heel-and-toe downshifting, skid track, etc. Everything builds up. The Bondurant 4 day class is right around $5K.

Maybe someone can give some of the details of the Miller class, and if we're really lucky someone has done both and can compare.

At the end of Bondurant you qualify (if your instructor says so) for a SCCA track card. Which reminds me I never got mine.

Larry H. Miller also owned the Utah Jazz basketball team. And a whole bunch of auto dealers, primarily in Utah but all over the west (there is one in Denver).

Coupe #13 (CSX2299 as I recall) spends 1/2 of its time at the Shelby American Collection in Boulder, CO. They trade vehicles back and forth. The Miller car at the museum last I went there last spring was the Miller GT40.

The Ford GT rally #6 was at Miller earlier this year. I didn't get my car in time, I really wanted to try out that track.

I agree that going to a school you will receive one on one instruction, you use their cars, but at a considerable cost. Many open track events have excellent driving instructors for free. They have a lot of experience driving cars just like yours and they can teach you a lot about car control and driving your car safely at speed. I have been participating, organizing and instructing drivers for over 30 years at open tracks and I'm guessing that I have gotten over 20-30 people hooked on open track events because of the fun, low cost of entry fees and the great group of people you get to hang out with at a race track. The greatest way to increase your skills is SEAT TIME. You have to be in your car, on the track driving. I tell people instead of spending $6,000 on a blower to make your car faster between corners, spend less money on some good tires and spend more time in the SEAT driving. You would be surprised on the credentials your driving instructors may have.

As Carroll Shelby says, Get out and drive them.

Great advice. And I was certainly surprised at my instructor's cred's... "Front Row" Joe Foster of the #15 Multimatic car!!!

Anything in the Pacific Northwest (ie Washington,Oregon, Idaho??

I've done three sessions at Pro Drive in Portland. http://www.prodrive.net/

I did the first two in my prior car, a '98 Cobra, and the last one in my '08 GT 500. I learned that my '98 was a far better balanced car, and took the corners FAR better than the Shelby. But the Shelby would hit 135 on the front straight (in 100% stock trim) before I had to lay on the brakes for the chicane turn. The nose heavy Shelby had to be slowed down more than the '98 to keep from going off track on that corner. The '98 could be drifted through the chicane beautifully.

It really is a blast, and I highly recommend it. The Pro Drive groups are fairly small, and you get a lot of track time in a day.

I've done schools and track days with ProFormance at Pacific Raceways near Seattle and they've started doing track days at Oregon Raceway Park in Grass Valley. I think they have good programs.

I 2nd the Proformance Class, I did that 2 years ago in Seattle and it was a great expierance, learned alot even tho I had done track days there from time to time since 1993.

I recently put together (OCT 1st) a group event (mostly made up of NWMCF Car Club members) with the Cascade Sports Car Club here in Portland, there was 6 of us Mustangs owners (2 novice) that signed up as a group to run Portland Int Raceway and recieved $20 discount no matter if you were to signing up for the Driving School course or HPDE. They also do the Grass Valley venue, keep an eye out for next years schedule. The best thing about the group effort is we were guaranteed full refunds if it had rained or half the money if it rained half way thru the day. Maybe our car club will do something like this again next year to get more novice out on track.
