Super charger for 2007 GT

Recommended Posts

I currently have a GT 500 but have the opportunity to purchase a 2007 Shelby GT with a whipple supercharger and long tube headers resulting in 600+ H.P. The car only has 2,400 miles on it and my question involves a technicsl issue with the supercharger. With the car sitting for long periods of time with no use, and it has now been sitting for bout 12 months without use, are their any concerns about the condition of the supercharger? What should I be looking out for if I decide to make an offer on this car ? Thanks for your help.

The concern is if it's over 600 hp, the stock 4.6 won't last all that long. Also, if it has headers, that means it's been tuned and IMO based on research online, the frpp tune that comes with the whipple is a big part of why the motors hold up nice with that blower.

I would seriously question the legitimacy of the 600hp. The motor and SC should be fine sitting for that length of time and with infrequent use but I've never heard of a stock motored SGT making more the 550 (at the wheels) and living thru it.

Most whipple cars seem to hover around 500 at the wheels... If he was estimating crank HP, you're probably fine, but just look at the pulley he's running, it should be 3.125 or BIGGER. Most HO kits came with a 3.25" pulley. Also make sure the crank pulley is oem (all rusty), so you know it's not being overdriven.

With 2400 miles, it's probably been babied regardless, so you may be fine either way.

Worse issue with the whipple is either you have belt problems or you don't.... you can fix or prevent those issues with the 10 rib kit or with thumprrr tensioner and pullies. Not a big deal, but it's the only widespread issue with them that I know of.

I see from the responses so far that the main concern apperas to be the possible impact of the increased H.P. on the motor and other internals. All I know about the add ons is what is on the original sticker from the original dealer which states the following:

- Ford Racing Shelby GT 500 Whipple Roots style supercharger

- 602 H.P and 582 ft lbs of touque

- High performance long tube stainless steel headers

- Custom Overdrive aluminum non-slip crank pully

- Ford Racing Custom tuned high performance chip

Based on this, do you all think this may be too much for the motor, differential etc on a 2007 Shelby GT?

Thanks for the additional input.

Way too much and not only that the wording there is pretty f'd up if you ask me. Sounds like whoever created that description knows nothing about what he is selling.

Sounds like the dealer may be off... calling it a GT 500 blower....

BUT, those numbers are SPECIFIC, and it mentions the overdrive crank pulley... I don't really know. Even saying the "chip" is ford racing custom tuned sounds funky to me. Ford racing only offers one tune for the HO whipple for our cars as far as I know. Never heard of them tuning for headers or overdriven boost.

If it's in good running condition offer them $23K because whatever the case you will need to replace that shortblock and that will run you another $5K. Just my .02. It does depend on your driving style though. Like I said if you always baby it then you'll have nothing to worry about, but if you drive it hard it will break a rod.

Thanks to all of you who responded to this thread. Based on your input and the descrepencies in the discription of the add ons on the original sticker put on by the dealer, I am going to back off this car. This is why I like being a member of Team Shelby . the forum has always been a good source of information and advice.
