My GT500 vs 1 cyclist

Yesterday, I arrived near a 4 stop intersection. The light was red, and was arriving through the right lane, planning to turn right on the red light. On the left lane there was about 5-6 cars stopped, waiting the green light to proceed.

At the moment I was approaching, I believe I was driving a maximum of 50 km/h, a cyclist decided to cross the road (boulevard in fact), between the cars already stopped on the left lane. When he arrived to the right lane (the lane I was arriving), he did not check properly and crossed in front of me.

The result: I hit his bike with my left fender/front bumper and he ended his travel in the left side of my front windshield, knocking off the whole thing and when I push the break he fell back on the asphalt.

It's crazy when these things happens: the first second you're an happy driver and the next second you're not sure what's going on as you've lost suddenly your windshield as a cyclist appears from nowhere, crossing between cars instead to cross at the right place waiting his green light.

Anyway the cyclist hits the windshield with his right shoulder. That's good for him because he wears no helmet, so if it was his head it would have been worst for sure. I don't want to make any injure intentionnaly to nobody, but he was definitely not at the right place....

My car now: I have scratch on the front bumper, on the hood, the left fender and the left door as it hits the left front on the car. The windshield is completely gone, there was even parcel of glass all around the car inside....(the roof was up when it arrived).

here's my car now, before to get up the towing....

well, my first matter was the health of the cyclist of course. Even if it's his own fault, I probably screwed up the end of his summer (hopefully not his life) and I feel guilty for it....

I just hope they'll fix my vert as brand new. I'll miss the windows stickers saying "proudly built by mens and womens from Flat Rock"

Wow that sucks for everyone involved for sure. Curious as to how this gets worked out. Since you're of course not required to have auto insurance for riding a bicycle will your own insurance have to cover the cost to repair the car even though it wasn't your fault?

Hopefully he doesn't get lawsuit happy. :rant2:

Yeah I can see it now, 3 months before the statue of imitations runs out you get a knock at the door and you're handed a lawsuit!

First off I hope everyone is okay, second I hope they can fix the car back to like new condition.

I have seen bicyclists do some of the craziest thing when riding in traffic, and they look at you like WTF! didn't you see me? You should have have known that I was going to turn in front of you!

Good luck with everything!

The only good thing in this story is that Quebec is a no-fault jursidiction. You cannot sue, either for bodily injury (covered by the province through drivers' license and registration costs), or damage to the vehicle itself (which has to be insured with a private insurer, at a minimum for third party liability).

Cyclist indeed often do crazy things. That's extremely unfortunate.

In no way should you feel guilty for hitting this person...The cyclist got what he deserved...you did NOT. I'm not saying that I wish the person would have got killed or anything..but I sure hope the jackass learned a lesson and he might have a ache or pain for the rest of their life....however, I doubt if it changed them.

I'm glad that you came out of it okay....even though your car got beat up.

Disgusting that people think at a whim they can make their own rules and it's okay and everyone else should adjust to what they feel like doing.

First it goes without saying that I'm glad everyone is OK - bruised but OK.

However, I'm going to bet you have more damage than you think. That impact of that much weight in contact in the upper portion of the windshield area has probably bent the windshield and A-pillar back towards the ground. Have you raised the convertible top to see if it fits properly?

That just sucks, seeing your nice car damaged like that.

I also feel bad for the stupid cyclist; I like to ride too... But, there are WAY too many dumba$$es on bicycles these days, who think they can ride any way they want.

All it takes is for a car to appear, and they can become another statistic.

That sucks

Bicycles are governed under the motor vehicle act. I treat them the same as any other vehicle under the law (cars, trucks, motorcycles and so on ) I change lanes to pass them (don't crowd them into the curb) and slow down and wait to pass them when required. I have absolutly not use for cycles who do not obey the rules of the road. Pedestrian X walks are for people walking not bikes riding!! There are rules of the road I have to drive by and bikes must also obey. I wish our law enforcement persons would do something about the bikes gone wild in our city.

I would also hope the cyclist you hit get a ticket for unsafe operation of a vehicle.

If you want to ride with out rules do it off road not on city streets where you could hurt someone.

Had you been going any faster that cyclist could of ended up in your backseat and injured or killed a passenger (possibly a grandchild in a car seat).

I went to the body shop today to see how things goes. The good news, is that the person in charge of my car owns hisself a Mustang and is a real Mustang fanatic, and he looks quite perfectionnist...yeah ! Also they already started the work on the car....

Now here's what they are doing:

-fixing/painting the top frame of the windshield (The A pillard is still good and not affected)

-changing the windshield

-fixing and painting of the left door

-changing the front left fender + painting

-changing the hood + painting

-fixing and painting thefront bumper

-changing the front bumper lower lip

-changing the front left SVT wheel

That'S a lot of dammage for juste a fuc**** cyclist. There might be some delays for the new hood and wheel, for the availability.

I can't imagin if it would have been a cement truck !

Hopefully the shop it got towed to burns to the ground and you get a new free replacement GT500 instead of a aftermarket paint job that gonna start chipping off the first week it hits the streets again.

Sorry :(

This dude obviously doesn't know any great bodymen/painters , pay no attention to this cause if you have the right guy doing the work your car will be just as good as when it came off the showroom floor ,,,YEA just as good.....paint chippen off what a JOKE !!!!! Oh and to the original poster good luck with the car and glad no one was seriously injured....

Sorry to hear about your accident. I'm sure your car will get fixed up as good as new. Living in downtown Vancouver I see careless cyclists, pedestrians and motorists on a daily basis. I sometimes think it's not "if" but "when" will I have a similar experience. Way to many distracted people out there tuned out of what is going on around themselves and it seems to be getting worse.

The problem with the cyclist, is that they slide in between every law. They can't respect the pedestrian rules, they ride much faster and they can't obey the car's rules since they are too slow, and also much smaller. So what they do, is they take the best of both worlds.

They ride on the boardalk, they use the pedestrian light to cross the street, the car's light as well, they drive on the wrong side of the street, crossing anywhere they dont care: they are smaller and usually are not in the way of the cars....

And also the rules of the road is very permissive for them, as they are between every thing....so the Police is not very strict with them as no license is required to drive a bike on public road.

Here in UT, cyclists have received fines for riding behavior. The law requires them to be almost the same as autos. However, it is difficult to enforce....
