Spotts on Silver Stripes

Recommended Posts

Hi;

I am wondering if anybody has a solution to spotting on the silver stripes on my 2007 Shelby GT. The car is Black, with the matte silver stripes. The spotts look like rain spots, it's the best way that I can describe it. I have tried washing, gentle waxing, and even some Armorall, all with no success. I am praying that these are not permanent...

I really appreciate any feedback or suggestions..

Thanks!

replace them with some 3m stripes of just get them painted and cleared on. i never realized how crappy they where till i started looking at my buddys SGT. he was telling me they are 3 year life span stripes. i dont know for sure so if im wrong im sorry, but from what he was tellin me they are 3 year 3m have some 10 year. im not a fan of the stickers. mine were on 2 different runs. to the eye they look the same. in pics you can tell the tint is off on them.

Who did you contact for the warranty? My fear is that since it is a 2007, they will probably try to weasel out of it..

Thanks for your response!

There's no "weaseling" out of anything, like it or not, there is a warranty period and even then there is an exception for that the stripe manufacturers call "environmental damage". The care of stripes like ours is something that has to be an active process. You can't for example leave water to dry on the stripes. You can't allow morning dew to condensate on the stripes. You can't allow rain water to sit on them and dry. Not ideal but that's the nature of them no matter how makes them. The best option, if you can't garage your car, and don't want to bother with them, is to just have them painted on.

and here:

But chances are pretty slim to none that the stripes will be covered at this late date especially for "environmental damage".

Please do yourself a favour and get the stripes painted on, if you plan on keeping the car!

My stripes look horrible. My dealership took lots of pictures and sent them in to Shelby for warranty replacement. Shelby said, "Tough. 12-month warranty on stripes. Your problem." Thanks for using the good stuff, Carroll.

Well then your dealer lied to you. Shelby did not tell you or your dealer that as Shelby does not handle the warranty claims. All warranty claims go thru your Ford dealership.

Please use the links in this thread that JeffJ graciously took the time to post. A few minutes of your time reading some previous stripe posts will get you up to speed on what to and what not to do when it comes to any stripe issues.

Best of luck.

I will guarantee you that Shelby had NOTHING to do with this "decision". Ford has a "Shelby Relationship Center" or something, and there are lots of people in that lineup who may veto it. Including your stealership. SURPRISE!

Keep asking, try different avenues, INCLUDING a different dealer who CAN find his @ss with both hands. Everyone loves to throw "Shelby" under the bus, they're full of it.

So morning dew and rainwater ruin the stripes? No matter who makes them ?

I think you might want to research that....

I understand that the "original stripes" were not a material suitable for horizontalvsurfaces but th replacements are...

I mean shoot Trans Am's have had the screaming chicken on em and my buddies did not do what these do.

So where did you get this info from? Thanks Jeff...

IMHO the people who are stuck with messed up stripes are the one's who wound up under the bus.

^^^^ Werd.

And I would bet that Ford didn't pick that material since the 500s don't have this problem.

Now that you mention it, I'd be really curious to know how many GT500s, (if any), have problems with their stripes!? If few/none, my guess is we got the "discount" version!

In my mind, the original stripe brand (3m/Oracal?) manufacturer is the real villan here - they probably sold Ford/Shelby a faulty product with a "just as good as paint" sales pitch and laughed all the way to the bank!

Use the Google and search for the words fallout and vinyl.

Here is a great example:

Calls out Orcal, and 3M and is a VERY interesting read!

This will make you chuckle: My 1976 "Cobra II" vinyl stripes had water spot issues, but not to the degree we seem to be having today! If you let water stand on those stripes, you would get hard water/calcium rings, but this would come right off with a good wash/wax. I had that car for 10 years - 8 with the OEM vinyl - then had a nasty accident and had the stripes painted on! I wonder who made that vinyl striping and if it's true they "don't make it like they used to"!? (Don't think that applies to vinyl siding - that stuff has really gotten good over the years!)

I think the big issue, as called out in the post, is the use of "metallics" which seem to be VERY susceptible to this kind of damage.

Net/Net if you have an SGT you need to be VERY careful to properly care for the stripes!

Ok, I went to the dealership that sold me the car originally. They seemed totally sympathetic to my stripe issue. Unfortunately, since I took the other dealership's word for it, saying that the stripes only had a 12/12 warranty, and I only recently found out that that isn't so, I am now 2 months OUT of warranty. They said I had to go back to the jerk dealership and take it up with them, but also suggested that I contact Ford on the issue. They thought I had a legitimate gripe about being lied to by the other dealership. So, I went back, and they didn't agrue with me, but were obviously not happy to see me. They went through all the motions, taking pictures, saying they would re-contact Shelby and Ford about getting them replaced. This was Friday. He said he'd call me back Monday (tomorrow) with an answer. When I questioned that, he said Shelby was always really quick to reply to warranty work. THAT was a new one to me. I have never heard anyone claim that Shelby was quick to reply to anything. I do intend to contact Ford Customer Service as well, if only to file a complaint against this dealership. We'll see how it goes...

Does anyone have a phone number where I could contact Shelby to find out if any claim has EVER been made for the stripes on my car? That would be great info to take to Ford if they never even filed a claim.

I thought I was going to get into it with the service manager. He kept asking me if it was a 350 or a 500. I said neither. He kept rolling his eyes, telling me it had to be one or the other. I had to explain to him what an SGT was, and he looked at me like I was just being a smartass. We have a lot of Ford dealerships in the Denver area. Thus far, I am down to only one that I ever care to visit again. How does Ford stay in business when their dealerships are such :censored: ?

Guys,

BTW, just for clarity: When I said I'm sick of people throwing Shelby under the bus for this, I mean the DEALERSHIPS that don't bother to go through the official procedure with the Relationship Center at Ford, the ones who just say "Shelby denied your warranty".

I won't have a misery contest with anyone, but my stripe experience was Hell on Earth, and I'm not going to say that original stripe material wasn't junk.. But, regarding warranty, once the ACTUAL SHELBY COMPANY was contacted, my process smoothed out considerably.

JUST so everyone understands my earlier post.
