stewarbc
So, while mowing this morning, I must have disturbed a number of these evil things that are common around here. I always remember growing up and seeing the yellow rings around their bellies and stayed well clear of them! Sometimes I saw them carrying their kills(cicadas) back to their lairs. They burrow into the soil and take cicadas deep into their holes. Well, there are two fewer of these in my backyard now....... Note stinger! :eek5:

stewarbc
Wasp killer from a distance did the trick but they seemed to be chasing me down before I got 'em in their holes.
09 Red GT500
I've lived in the same place for quite awhile now and we have had those twice. They are a bit annoying, but after a month or so, they are gone. Then it will be years before we get them again. They never seemed to bother people, so we just ignored them. It's been 6 or 7 years now since the last time we had them. We are probably due .

stewarbc
They have always been around here(last 15 years) and it's probably because of all trees with cicadas in them and an annual 10 yard dirt pile in the back yard. I use the dirt to fill the chasms in the black gumbo (attached photo is one of the small chasms). Can't keep regular soil wet enough in the summer and it expands and contracts. Wreaks havoc on the foundation too. The cicado killers like to use the dirt pile because it's soft sandy loam soil. I probably pissed them off when I went over their lairs with the mower. David Hawkins
In my parts, we have Ginnie Wasps that like to live underground and they will chase you for hundreds of yards if you piss them off. The best time to get them is at Night and with a gallon of Gas and a match. Fill there Hole with the Gas, let it soak in and toss a lit Match on it BUT be sure to stand back.......... 09 Red GT500
The cicada killers don't seem aggressive at all when I have been around them. I'd take them every few years over millions of flies or nats or whatever they are that I encounter when I go to Virginia. Just the act of breathing sucks them in. Not to mention they get in your ears and eyes constantly.
