Burning smell during and after driving...

Recommended Posts

About 2 weeks ago, I noticed something smelled as if it was burning when I got home after driving my SGT. I began sniffing around and finally pin pointed the smell to be coming from under my hood. I lifted my hood up and sniffed again and the burning smell was definitely coming from the engine compartment. I began looking to see if any crap got caught underneath the car (leaves, plastic) something, but I didn't see anything. I put the hood down, went inside and noticed that after driving a few more times the smell never came back. Tonight I was driving, and had my window open, and all of a sudden that same burning smell came back. I have no clue as to what it is. EVERYTHING is running fine. My oil temp is fine, oil pressure is perfect, everything seems to be okay, I just am puzzled as to what is making this burning smell. I know it's also not the clutch burning, I know what a burning clutch smells like and this burning smell is not that. Anyone have or had this issue? Any idea's as to what it might be? :headscratch:

Do you have to be driving for a while before it does it? Is it possible a piece of plastic bag or something got up on top of the header collector or pipes ...or maybe some of the reflective barrier got loose and is resting on it? ...something like that maybe. You might have to put it up on a lift to check since a plastic bag would shirvel pretty quicly and then might only smell when it gets hot enough to char it some more. Dunno...

I did happen to go over a plastic bag on the highway, but didn't think it got stuck under the car. That could be it, I'll check tomorrow morning again.

Sorry to possibly state the obvious, but could it be brake pads? (That smell gets everywhere, even under the hood)...

The key is whether it smells like an asbestos-like material, plastic, rubber, maybe electrical?

Just trying to rule out the easy stuff...

I can't really explain or describe the burning smell as anything more than just something burning. My brake pads seem fine and I didn't do any hard braking at all tonight. I always down shift instead of braking too.

Keep up your diligence... you'll find it.

Yeah, I was thinking the parking break isn't fully disengaged...seen it many times. But also electrical issues. I had a bad bulb once that was overheating when on and it eventually burned through the wires etc. I think it's important that you get it in before what ever it is does serious damage.

I've noticed that mine runs kinda warm ever since the SC was installed, and I can smell the "warmth" if that makes any sense, not burning tho. Also if you have an aftermarket clutch they do smell different than other clutches. I know my McLeod has a distinct odor when it's slipped. Just a thought.

Hey Brandon..I know you recently had the long tubes installed. Check the header bolts near the gaskets. After install and a few thermal cycles, they can loosen up and start to burn a gasket. Take a look.

JDM installed everything on my car, and I'm hoping that is not the case. They did a great job on everything. Hopefully it's just a piece of plastic that I ran over last night.

Well, it's not an error, most people consider it normal for new headers to require re-torquing after a short break-in period.

Glad to see you found the problem.

Ditto!
