Bad batch of Shelby GT grill housings

Recommended Posts

About a month ago, I ordered the SGT grill housing to replace the stock housing in my 07 SGT. When it arrived, I took out the original and the SGT grill wouldn't fit inside it. It was a quarter inch too short. I called SPP and explained my situation and they said they would send out a replacement right away. 2 weeks later it shows up. This time the grill just barely fits inside it. It's still at least an eighth of an inch short. also this time, the support braces on the new housing do not line up with the support braces in the grill. they are almost 1" off. This is too far to even try to rig something up to make it work. Even if I did, it would look like crap looking at it from the front and seeing everthing not lined up. I will be on the phone first thing tomorrow morning with SPP to get maybe another one sent. I shouldn't have to go through this over and over again. At this point I feel that I should get the part for free and it should fit just fine. I am so frustrated with this, if the next one doesn't fit, i'll probably just deal with the old stock GT grill behind there looking bad. I have ordered a lot of parts from SPP and haven't had any problems yet, but this is really letting me down.

If you are talking about the original honeycomb grill why not just remove it completely?

then what do I screw the SGT grill to? what i need is an SGT grill housing that fits properly and lines up evenly. I have seen other cars with this "simple" change already completed that the owners have had no problems.

Well you can tell I never looked at mine! I noticed about two weeks ago that when the SC upgrade was done to mine someone took a saw to the honeycomb and cut out several spots whether for access or more air I don't know..... :headscratch: but I know of someone else that removed the original grill and left just the aluminum one and it looked pretty clean. I will have to find out how he did it and I'll let ya know, because now I want to, mine looks like crap.....

Yes, I heard of another member that order the 08 version to update his 2007 style. And it was way off and he got very little support from SPP. I won't go in to details but it was very frustrating to him. He ended up cutting it up to make it work. I don't think it's right but what are you going to do :headscratch:

I have seen many 2005-2009 Mustangs with the Billit Grill and they removed the Factory Grill all together and it looked really good. Does the Shelby Grill mount to the Honeycomb or to the Surround? If it mounts to the Surround, why not just cut out the Honeycomb?

The billet grill mounts to the surround and the honeycomb - it's one piece. My "butchered" 2007 grill was OK, except the exposed portions in front of the billet grill were warped and very wavy. I ordered a 2008 "non-butchered" surround from SPP as soon as they became available and had no issues with the fitment/install.

If the fitment is that bad, there might have been a change in the manufacturer/process and somewhere the specs got mixed up!

Hopefully, SPP will get it straightened out for you.

In 2007, when SAI was building the first batch of SGTs, they were send out with billet grilles mounted to modified factory GT grilles. The factory grille was cut, acting as a the mount or housing for the Shelby GT billet grille. Some time in 2007, SAI began using SGT grille housing INSTEAD of the modified GT grille. To my knowledge, all the 2008 SGTs use the SGT housing and grille.

2007 SGT owners should be able to buy the housing and swap it out for the modified GT grille. Make sense? The housing was designed to mount directly to the bumper and have the grille itself bolt to it.

One last thing, the manufacturer may have changed at some point. It was Scott Drake, but I don't know whose making them now.

The first picture shows the modified GT grille, while the second one shows the SGT grille housing.

I bought the complete grill & housing set up last fall when SPP had a good sale as a back-up, but have never had it out of the box. I'd kind of like to know if it fits without having to swap it out the old one. I guess I'll have to give it a shot to see for sure.
