Big Bend Area

The Badlands Hotel in the Lajitas Resort is a very nice place. Stayed there several times and spent way too much time in the thirsty goat saloon. The resort is overall a class act.

If you take the Shelby out there, be sure to take the drive up to Presidio.

You asking this will be a pretty funny topic for all of us that go to Terlingua every year. LaJitas is about 75 miles south of Alpine, but is quite a nice place! The Gage Hotel in Marathon is also a place where we like to stay the night before Terlingua. Lots of fun there! Also, look up user VorpalBunny. David lives in Terlingua and can probably tell you just about anything you would like to know about the area. There's also an amazing little place in Alpine full of Shelby's called the Stable. Don't miss it!

Has anyone stayed at any of the hotels in Fort Davis/Alpine general area? If so, which, and how would you rate the establishment?

Thanks for any info!

No arguments with the above recommendations. If you're looking for a place in Ft. Davis (close to the observatory, etc) My family has stayed HERE before and really loved it. If you were at the Terlingua 2008 event, the chili cook-off and lunch were in the town square right in front of the hotel. It has an interesting history relating to the observatory.......

By far, my favorite place to stay in the Ft. Davis area is the Indian Lodge in Ft. Davis Park. Best accomodations in the area, IMO.

However, I usually stay at the Alpine Ramada on the road out toward Marfa, and it's clean and reasonable. A bonus is the restaurant next door - they've changed ownership in the last couple years and I can't recall the name now, but they still have good grub.

The Best Western on the Ft. Stockton end of Alpine is about like the Ramada but I like the Ramada's location better (outside town a bit).

The Limpia Hotel in Ft. Davis is very nice - a touch more expensive but worth it, and they have a good restaurant within rock-tossing distance.

If you're into cheap, there's a little motel on the road into Ft. Davis from Balmorhea, about a quarter mile before the turnoff to the Park, that's very basic, but not too bad.

We ate a brunch at the Indian Lodge. As an architect, I love the character of "place" that it has. I would like to stay there some day too.

BTW, try to plan your visit around a new moon and make reservations for the observatory's star gazing event; absolutely INCREDIBLE night sky!

One of the coolest things about the Indian Lodge is the fact that all the furniture in the rooms was made by hand back when the Park was built by the WPA, back in the '30s. It's really amazing. If you get a room overlooking the park, you can watch the sun rise through the "notch" in Limpia Canyon - truly a gorgeous way to start the day. And there are some outstanding hiking trails just right outside your room.

We screwed up and went to the Observatory on a full moon, and it was still worth the trip. Though visibility was hampered, we were stunned at the rings of Saturn through the big 'scope.

Not sure when you're planning your trip, but be aware that things are probably still somewhat disrupted out there - I don't know the current status, but as of a couple weeks ago they were still fighting fires. Here's a pretty stunning shot of the observatory with the wildfires burning in the background......a beautiful photograph of a horrific scene.

I dont know that Shelby's are allowed in west Texas in October anymore. :hysterical:

If you go the first weekend of October you may see one or two or 40 other Shelby's out there.

I missed last year's get-together in west Texas, but I sure am planning on this year. Is there a hotel where everyone usually stays, or are the Shelby folks scattered throughout the area?

Dave - if you're contemplating staying at the Indian Lodge, I'd highly recommend going ahead and making your reservation now. They tend to book far ahead, especially during holiday season/weekends.

Also, if you're into camping, the campsites at the Davis Mts Park just can't be beat.
