2007 Shelby GT vs 08 BMW 335i Couipe

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I'm in the process of buying/ selecting a 2007 Shelby GT .. reason I love the car and for me its within my budget.

My immediate concern is "taking on" an 08 BMW 335i .... ( This car can take 07 and below M3's .. in 08 BMW replaced the Engine in the M3 so the 08 335i and M3 don’t compare)

I can’t stand BMW's .. I can’t stand them at all .. but at the same time you got to keep your eye on their performance .. I'm not talking M3 here I'm talking 335i .

I have a friend that has a 2008 335i ..... he is getting the following :

HP ( Dynoed ) 345

0-60 --- 4.8 seconds

0 - 100 11.8

1/4 mile 13.3 @ 108mph

This guy’s car is stock .... and quite frankly I can’t stand the bragging about his car .. and yes we could all sit here and say go buy the 2011 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Sega edition and smoke all the BMW's you come across .. but that’s not what I want to do.

So we are talking the stock 2007 Shelby GT ……

Your thoughts and ideas please

Add a whipple and sticky tires and he's toast.

stock it'd be close depending on how well you hook up, but specs put him out in front a little.

Jason I'm assuming you are talking this:

I'm also assuming thats what you have installed .. what was the price?

The 335I is a twin turbo V-6 and is nice and a fast car. However the car is not dyno'd at 345 RWHP unless he has done some major improvements to the engine, the car should be dyno'd at 300 HP at the crank not RWHP, from what i have researched. I like BMW's alot, they are nice cars with a lot of technology behind them. So taking the Shelby GT at 319 crank HP the number are close except for the 0-60 time and the BMW should out manuver the Shelby GT in the twisties too, but not by much and would depend greatly on the driver. The BMW is a 4.8 to 4.9 second 0-60 mph car with the 1/4 mile in approx. 13.4 @ 104 mph, the Shelby GT is a 4.9-5.0 0-60 mph and a 13.7 1/4 mile car, they are both very nice cars but apples to apples your going to pay about $32K for a real nice BMW 335I and about $26.5K for a real nice Shelby GT, so the Beemer is 20% more expensive.

Those 335's are quite fast with a upgraded intercooler and chip to remap the computer for higher rpm's and more boost. You can find already boosted SGT if you look around hard enough, a black one just sold on here for a killer price. Welcome aboard btw.

VERY good advice.

Also, Roger @ SAI just listed a stock white SGT with like 200 miles on it for $30K if you'd rather have a "new" one... but you really should be able to find a SGT w/ a blower for under $30k at this point.

You can safely put an SGT up to 550 HP. I don't think you can do that w/ the 335, but I could be wrong.... :headscratch:

With an aggressive tune only (no bolt ons), VP109 race gas, and some really dense air, my best track day in my 2007 335i was 12.5 at 115 mph. There are lunatics running low 11s in their 335s.

If I get tired of my Shelby, I'll probably get another BMW.

Cruise together to a local SONIC Drive-In :shift:

Place your orders at the same time and then wait to see which car they bring the food to first?

My guess is the one with the Silver Stripes will get taken care of well before the BMW :finger:

Does the BMW sound nasty like supercharged V-8 or does it cound like the "wooosh'ish" mean? :) Like a turbo charged V-6 usually sounds "wooosh'ish" if you know what I mean? After reading this back I don't know if i made sense but you'll get the idea as there is not much that sounds like a supercharged cammed up V-8, even if the Beemer is running 12.5.

My sister in law has the 335i and my Shelby has had a new bottom end and headwork done and a roushcharger and everything you could think of adding to the roushcharger by Justin at VMP :). I also have a few extra goodies and I can leave that BMW sitting. I know I got a lot in my car but still im faster :)

Sounds turbocharged. Different sound than supercharged. I like both. Stock exhaust for 335 sounds aggressive under boost. Like any car, you can go aftermarket exhaust to get the sound you want. BTW, my GT500 is catless with magnaflow magnapacks. Just ordered two magnaflow resonators to tone it down a bit.

If you don't want a 5.4 liter american muscle car, that 3 liter german engineered car is pretty impressive. Adding quick horsepower is plug 'n play away with a 335 turbo. The tunes are way more user friendly than what we have available for our Shelbys.

BTW, not that it matters on a Mustang board, but a Beemer is a motorcycle. Car is a bimmer.

Oh....sorry to all the euro trash. No just kidding!!!!! I actually love the cars, extremely well made, awesomely engineered and one of the best all around driving cars worldwide. So Bimmer it is! ;) But I would leave it quickly in my car too. :)

I can tell you the story of both cars. I owned a 2007 BMW 335I coupe, Red with an ivory interior. It was a really nice car. Put some great wheels on it and some other cosmetic mods. The thing ran great. Sounded good and looked really nice. It drove really well, as you expect from a BMW. Then I owned a 2007 Shelby GT. Started off stock, then added a 500hp Whipple, only thing available at the time, nice wheels and lots of other mods. The two cars are apples and oranges. As nice as the BMW was nobody and I mean nobody paid one bit of attention to that car. Here is a shot of my 335i. Granted, people liked it but just in passing.

Now onto my Shelby GT. Even before I started modding it I would have a crowd of people standing around it when I brought it to work. After I was done modding it well that was another story. I placed in a couple of shows and had a great time but I couldn't get gas or stop at a stop light without someone talking to me or gawking on that car. It was amazing. It was fun and it was a joy to own. Some reasons came up and I decided that it needed to go. It wasn't a good decision after it was said and done because I really missed that car. I decided, after a period of time that it was time to get another fun car. I looked again at the 335i because they were starting to get reasonably priced, but there it was again that the car just didn't have that it factor. I just want to re-state that the BMW is a great car. It goes like stink and is smooth as butter. That 6 turbo is probably not equalled yet as far as the motor goes, but it couldn't hold a candle to the desire factor that the Shelby GT had. I still miss that SGT to this day and kick myself for not holding onto it. I have a GT500 now and have started to mod it but really the mods I'm doing are just trying to get it to where my SGT was. I know that in the end the GT500 will have more power and be a better car but I still long for that SGT I had. It was that great of a car.

Go for the SGT. It's one of those few cars out there that have it. That's what it's all about. BMW335I great car but it's just another one of those kind of cars out there. There are bunches of them, very competent, well done but they just don't have that thing that you remember when it's all said and done with. That thing that people will want years from now. Yea, I know the Shelby GT is not a collector car and all that but I can guarantee that in the future there will be a lot of folks out there that will have those memories of the SGT or any of the Shelby's and the BMWs will be fondly remembered but not desired.

Sorry, I got off the topic. The Shelby GT with a SC will whip the pants off of the BMW 335I. I've done it before. Now Stock it would be a close race. I know that one of the reasons that I got rid of the 335i I had was because too many guys in stock GT Mustangs could hang with me and even whip me. That was not good since I just paid in the 40s for that BMW and the GTs were in the 20s. I kept on thinking that it was crazy to pay that much for a car that didn't get the job done. Good luck with your SGT and happy modding. It's worth every penny.

Like Ilmore I had a sweet 2002.

The new ones to me scream "middle management".

When you have the juice you drive a Mercedes. Never mind that to me the BMW's look like everyother car on the road at a quick glance...

My friend has one...it's great...But it is not a Shelby. Buy the SGT, crank some old Sabbath and get a car that says "Rock On!"

The best mod you could make is Drivers School....BTW.

Wow, Swede... You sure have changed since installing that little shoe-box under the hood!

For bragging rights, think about the $37,000ish for a brand new 08 SGT (in 08) and, How much, for a brand new Bmer?

Get the SGT and never look back. You can build it any way you want, reasonably and smoke him at will!

  • 2 weeks later...

or be like me and cam the crap out of it. collecting dropped jaws at stoplights is more then worth the price for the cams and exhaust....the superchargers more bang for the buck though.

And me :D

Im heading to VMP too see Justin within the next few weeks to see what its putting down. Im actually a lil worried even though it has had some engine work im afraid im gonna blow the engine.

If I may share my first experience from road racing... I showed up in my SGT (looking like a true noob with my stripes all masking taped up in blue!)! I was the only Mustang or Shelby of any kind on the track that weekend at the Spring Rocky Mountain NASA opener at High Plains Raceway in Eastern Colorado. First time on a road course.

Even my instructor said before we got going the first time... "Okay, this thing is going to be a heavy handful out there. You're going to have to be very careful."...

Long session short... after we pulled in, he literally just paused and scratched his head and said... now what have you done to this thing? He was AMAZED at how well it handled. We passed everything (literally) on the course. Granted this was HPDE1, but still. He, a Porsche 944 Spec Time Trial Driver, was astounded at how well my SGT performed all weekend. By the end of the weekend, I was having TONS of BMW, Porsche and Miata drivers coming over to me in the pits... just scratching their heads, looking the car over from top to bottom and then asking me... so what have you done to this?! That's when I would tell them... tune, wheels and tires...

These cars CAN and DO perform VERY well on track (particularly ones with corners)...

Last quick story... when I was looking for mine initially, I found one for sale in Danbury, CA. I called and asked the guy.. "So is this daily driver? Sunday driver?" He said, nope, track car only. I said, Oh, so how does it do? He says, won my SCCA class in this region 2 years running. Wow, I said... what have you done to it? He said track wheels and tires... that's it.

Say what you say, but I make BMW's scratch their heads all weekend nowadays (especially now with the the Whipple). 335i's, M3's, M's, haven't been bested by a BMW yet in my SGT.... Knock on wood.
