How often between oil changes?

Recommended Posts

My driving distance has reduced significantly since retirement. In a three month period I average a total of 500 miles. My question is how often should I change synthetic oil? I am currently changing every 3-4 months regardless of mileage. With the use of synthetics do I need to continue this schedule? Thanks for your input.

changing synthetic every 3 months with just a few hundred miles each month car sounds like overkill.

I was told by my dealer that since I also don't put too many miles on my SGT that I should put in synthetic and change it once a year. That oil/ filter change cost $60. I can't change my oil at my apartment.

I put maybe only 5-6000 miles on my car each year. It can sit for about a week then get driven 10 miles each way to work and back until it stops raining. Then I might keep driving my now-dirty car until the weather improves and I wash it, cover it back up and ride my motorcycle instead.

Which reminds me....

I do mine every 6 months; I think that's "per the manual"...since I've put only 7800 miles on it in almost 4 years... :hysterical:

One thing about changing the oil every 3 months. Eventually you run the risk of stripping threads on the drain plug. That is why I bought a Fumoto oil valve drain valve. Flip of the switch and it drains and then flip the lever again and it is closed. No fear of stripping threads.

If your using Synthetic oils and only putting on a couple 1000 miles a year.................................. do it once a year.

Never heard of that valve before. Will definitely check it out. Thanks

Google Fumoto oil valve drain. I use the N series which has an extended fitting. I slide a clear plastic hose on the fitting and drain the oil directly into a suitable container without spilling a drop. Capt it and take it for recycle.

Agree 100% and abide by this on the 68 as it gets 1 - 2 k miles per year at most.

The SGT will get the oil changed every ~3000 miles (whether thats in 3 months or 5).

With conventional or synthetic blend oil- 3000 miles or 6 months, With FULL synthethic oil- 6000 miles or 6 months; whichever comes first. Just, fyi moisture can collect in the crankcase after it's being sitting for a long time, and it's not the base oil that breaks down, it's the additives that do; along with collecting dirt, sludge and carbon.

True story!

Here is an easy rule to live by (these are maximum time/mileage situations - I'm not saying you are wasting the oil by not using it this long)

syn/blend oil (Motorcraft) - 7,500 miles or 6 months

Hydrocracked synthetic (Castrol, Mobil 1, Pennzoil) - 10,000 miles or 6 months

True Synthetics (Royal Purple, Red Line) - 12,000 miles or 12 months

True synthetics (Amsoil top tier) - 15,000 miles or 12 months

Unleashed, I like your table, but I scale it back by another 40%. I'm still not buying into 10k miles oil changes, even on the Class 1, or top tier, oils. The reason is, regardless of how good the additives are, or how good the base oil is- the oil still gets dirty. I simply don't feel comfortable keeping a bunch of carbon and sludge suspended for that long. Bottom line, no matter how good the oil is, it gets dirty.
