smbullett
I have about 1,800 miles on the car and I'm starting to notice an odd moaning noise coming from the front of the car when making a turn. When I come back from a good ride I have to make a very slow tight right or left hand turn (75-90 degree turn) to enter my complex, (about 6-10 mph). When making the turn, clutch in or out, I can hear a low binding or rubbing noise coming from the front. I've read in other posts that similar posts have pointed to the rear differential being low on fluids, knowing that my sound is coming from the front, is this the same issue or something new? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
bicarb6
From what I've been told it is the rear diff. I dont think its the diff fluid being low. Ford will tell you its normal, im thinking its a "normal problem" just my two cents worth. Just because its normal doesnt mean it isnt WRONG. The other threads do have answers. Ford does not. Mine does not do it all the time. It only does it when there is a crowd of people around:)

bicarb6
Do you remember what or where the other posts suggested? Any help would be appreciated. Friction Modifier but there might of been issues with warranty. Also try some figure 8's in a parking lot.
ChrisSD
They can't void your warranty for properly filling the rear dif. They don't from the factory.

Just Know my dealer didnt suggest Friction Modifier just said "normal" Agree, it's normal since most do it but not right. Fix it. A correctly filled rear end with Ford XL-3 friction modifier @ 4 ounces doesn't groan on corners.
KEYSTONE
Is it a moaning, "rubbery" sound? If so, it's the rear diff. Dealer told me it's normal......
Snake Doc
Friction Modifier but there might of been issues with warranty. Also try some figure 8's in a parking lot. +1 Friction Modifier It won't affect your warranty as that is a warranty issue and friction modifier (Ford fluid) is Ford's solution. TSB 08-5-10 I had that issue w/my '09 and mentioned it to the Svc Mgr at 1st oil change and have not heard it since. If your dealership won't fix it for you, go to his parts dept and get a bottle of the friction modifier, I believe it's less than $5 and add it yourself. 8.8 LIMITED SLIP AXLE MOAN/GROAN NOISE TSB 08-5-10 DURING LOW SPEED MANEUVERS ISSUE Some 2005-2007 Mustang GT vehicles equipped with the 8.8 inch limited slip axle may exhibit a moan/groan noise when making tight low speed turns. This may be more noticeable when the axle is at full operating temperature. The noise may also be confused as originating from the brakes or steering system. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. ……… 2. ……… 3. Vehicles built after 10/22/2006 were built with the new limited slip clutch pack. For these vehicles, add 1 bottle of Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier to the axle. Perform several full lock turns at low speeds in both directions to force the lubricant into the limited slip clutch pack. Good Luck!

Going to print it out and insist that my service manager look into this for me. If he can't do anything, I'll buy it myself and do it. Thanks for everyones help. Slabo
This has been discussed many times here and your are correct that Ford considers it normal for the carbon fiber clutches in our 8.8 rear diffs. TSB 08-5-10 does not apply to the GT500 with the CF clutches. Now with that said adding the friction modifier has worked for many owners. I would not add a full bottle because you can have to much and your limited slip will stop working. Good luck.

Ford changed it and the noise was gone.

kawwy600
i took mine to the dealer in december when i got my 10k mile oil change and they said it was normal due to the clutch pack. i told them about other MY2010 having the same rubbing noise and that the ford friction modifier fixed the problem but they said it was not covered by the warranty and that it may cause other problems that will not be covered by the warranty if i apply the fluid. i have almost 15k miles now just ignoring the sound when it comes and goes
moody03svt
any of these noises happen when the rear diff is at operating temp and the car is going straight? or is this ONLY when going very slow and making sharp turns?

Good luck. +1 I just replaced the clutches in my 2011 GT diff (after burning the stockers up) with the GT500 carbon clutches. Filled it with one bottle of ford friction modifier and 75w140 Gl-5 synthetic and it moans around turns just like my old 2010 GT500 did. The stock GT clutches were absolutely silent on tight turns but they didnt last but one dragstrip pass when one tire started spinning.
xjrguy
I had this problem with my 2010. I put the car up on my lift, removed the diff cover while draining the factory fluid, resealed the diff and filled with Mobil 1 75w-140 Syn and a bottle of Limited Slip fluid. Problem solved and no worry of dealer techs joy riding my car or anything else. Took me 30 minutes.

Took me 30 minutes. 75w140 LS mobil 1 synthetic already has limited slip additive in it ( thats what the LS means), so putting another 4oz of ford XL3 in there pretty much doubles it up. If the dealer pours an extra bottle of XL3 in it will quiet down as well..
kawwy600
my dealer wouldn't cover the ford friction modifier and a couple thousand miles later...the sound disappeared on its own. rarely does the sound reappear. whoever whenever i get out of my car or if i push down on the rear of my car something squeaks underneath. i think i need to have the shocks lubricated (i got my 15k mile service coming up so we'll see)
