07SGT5687
Met the founders of the Sturgis Mustang Rally last year in Steamboat Springs and they sold me on how great of a Rally they are putting together up there. I've only heard good/great things about the first couple of years of it so far. Autocross, drag racing, cash and car prizes (yes, they give away a car), pub crawls (bus transport), free-for-all poker run throughout the Black Hills, Show-n-shine, car parade... Anyway, we've pretty much committed to going, but we're not sure about the lodging scenarios up there. I REALLY don't want to park in a hotel parking lot for 4-5 days... so we were thinking about renting a house/garage, hopefully sharing with a couple other cars/couples. Sooooooooo... it's anyone going and would anyone like to share a house for the weekend if we can find one? I need to register soon, but am hesitant to do so until I get something figured out for lodging...

Haven't heard of this one, but having lived up in Rapid City and experienced the motorcycle rally 3 times, I'll tell you that if you don't square away the lodging early you're asking for trouble. The population of SD roughly triples when the rally comes to town, and the communities around Sturgis usually make enough on that one month to cover down for annual expense. Read--the prices for lodging will only go up! As far as lodging goes, Rapid City is about 10 miles away from Sturgis and there are plenty of folks that rent out there houses during that time..you can probably google plenty of spots. The parking at a hotel isn't optimum, as things usually gets rowdy with all the extra people, but I think that you'd be okay as long as you keep an eye on the car. Even if you're going solely for the Mustang Rally, and nobody else makes it from this forum, you've got to experience the "black hills classic" once in your life. Be advised that everything there is PG to PG-13 during the daylight, and after dark it goes up from there. So, if you're taking family be prepared, but it's a blast nonetheless, have fun and post pictures when you get back!

I grew up in Aberdeen, SD AND grew up going to the Sturgis Bike Rally every year. Worked at one of the big the campgrounds for quite a few rallies. I've seen the Hills a bunch, but my wife hasn't so it'll be a perfect opportunity to show her the Hills. They are a hidden treasure. Their Poker Run is pretty cool in that they just stash cards at the majors attractions throughout the Hills and then they just cut you loose for the day... You go where you want, get your cards and then show back up that night. Cool idea that keeps it from being a big slow car parade. Good idea about staying in Rapid. Maybe some of the bigger hotels have covered parking there. Cheers, JR
RACERX009
I would love to but as always its last minute and always never make it. But if its worth to you for safe parking you can always go to P.D with a big box of donuts and ask if they know of any safe parking. Most of the times they will hook you up either in their lot or a nice location. I always find a hotel by the cops then ask if its ok to park in their lot. Cops love free food I should know (retired cop) I would never eat a donut on patrol my 3rd day on patrol with a Sgt he bought powder donuts NYPD back then we had black jacket. We had white powder all over us. This guy runs up to us and tells this guy broke into an apt. It was embarassing enough the guy turn around and says thats the guy he was carry a stereo he see's us and runs. Now we are chasing him with covered in white powder after we caught we got busted on for days over that.
abrush
I have been to the Sturgis Mustang Rally the last 2 years. It truely is a great show. The first time I went I didn't take a car but happened to take a vacation while it was going on so I drove to Sturgis to check it out. I was pretty impressed therefore last fall I trailered my 2005 Mustang GT there. We pulled it with a motorhome bus so we found a campground and stayed there. It worked out really well. If you do go I would highly advise to make room reservations asap as they do fill up quickly as there is not a lot of places to stay that are close. The only complaint I had was how dusty the state is. I had to dust my car several times during the show. Otherwise it is a really good time. I won't be there this year as I am going to the National Show in Des Moines in August so that will most likely be my vacation for the summer. FordFan1
All in for Sturgis, but wheeling a ROUSH Since we had so much fun driving to Steam Boat in 2008, this time around we thought Sturgis would be a great trip. We've already got reservations and paid in full. :happy feet:
abrush
Nice photo's !!! Do you have a space for me in that motor home ??? I'm a tiny guy and house broken Ha! Ha! The motorhome is actually my parent's. We made a bargin with them that we would pay for all the fuel and they covered the rest of the expenses so it worked out really well. Don't think I will be able to talk them into going with us to the Des Moines National show so we will most likely drive there although it is only 3 hours from us. Now I just have to decide if I want to take the Shelby or my 65 fastback. Decisions, decisions.....

dsastang67
I have been to Sturgis the last 2 years. It is an absolute blast! They really like to get you out to drive your cars so if you do not like to drive, stay home. The hotel parking lots are packed however most of the cars in them are all Mustangs. The show and shine is huge! The parade gets to be almost too much with so many cars. It takes alot of cops to escort through town. The Mustang Rally is completely different from the Motorcycle Rally. At the motorcycle rally, the party starts at 9:00pm. At the Mustang Rally, the cars are all put away and the owners are in bed by 9:00pm. I definately reccomend it!!! I will set up and read people fortune and we can scare people to leave and get their parking space.
JeffJ
I've gone to Steamboat for 21 years and have gone to Sturgis the last two. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Sturgis is a great time, nothing like the motorcycle ralley. There are plenty of places to stay during the Mustang weekend. About 10 folks from the Denver Mustang Club rented a really nice house just outside of Sturgis this last year. That made it much more fun. Probably the best bet. They do give the opportunity to role dice to win a Mustang in Sturgis, but I have never seen that happen, odds are about like the lottery. They end up auctioning the prize Mustang off during the awards banquet. The drive is really nice. We spent quite a bit of time this last year at Mt. Rushmore on that day. Much fun! The drag racing is 1/8 mile and a very late Friday night at a place with not much asphalt, so plan on getting pretty darn dusty (dirt lot) if you attend the drag racing. It is a very good time however. The autocross track they have is about 1/2 the size of the one at Steamboat, so not much speed, very small. Again fun, but not much of a standard autocross if you've done others. So to compare the two shows, Steamboat has much better places to stay with better parking, the drive in Sturgis is way better and they have much better places to go with great roads, there are only a few routes you can really take in Steamboat. I like the evening awads banquet at Sturgis with a great bar, imagine that. Awards are much fewer in Sturgis compared to the number in Steamboat and the classes are much better organized in Steamboat. The autocross is much better in Steamboat, but you also get drag racing (1/8 mile only) in Sturgis. All in all, they are both great shows. This year I will probably only get to do Steamboat, but will certainly try to get back to Sturgis some time. The house we stayed in which is much bigger than it looks, three stories 5 bedrooms, very nice inside: Prudome GT500: Mt. Rushmore: Nice stop on side of the drive:
Retired CSM
There are several parking garages in Deadwood that are covered. Rooms at the casinos are usally available. It's about 10 miles south/west of Sturgis on 14A, a very nice drive. Sturgis should have rooms available, I know they filled up fast last year. We'd love to have you visit, this group gives it all for a successful good time.

Thanks for the info, that's a great idea. Do you recommend any particular hotels in Deadwood that are covered?
Retired CSM
No I'm just a retired old soldier. As for the garages there is one at the the First Gold Hotel and Casino and a public parking garage in the middle of town, close to all of the Hotels and Casinos. My nieghbor, about a quarter of a mile down the road, was the original founder of the Sturgis Mustang Rally. Frank is good people with a vision. I've also been dealing with the Ford Dealer in Sturgis , one of the sponsers, for sometime now. If your looking for a good time with small community hospitality this is it. Hope to see you this year.
