chiknhawk
Ok, heres whats on my mind. I currently have a 2010 red/silver gt 500, with 5000 miles. I love the car, however I have a long time love affair with Dodge Vipers. I have found a 1999 Black Viper GTS coupe with 10,000 miles, and in mint condition. The car is located on a Dodge lot, and they are offering me the car for $33,000. I cant keep both so i would have to decide, should I keep the Shelby or get the Viper? I am seeking advice along with others experiences with owning Vipers. Thanks

Depends on what you want, he liked the car but had issues with storage, high heat in the cab, car being too low and hitting any high spots on the road, fitting the roof, storing the roof and last of all being slower than my 2008 GT500. If it's what you love, go for it they are great cars.
xjrguy
I owned a 2005 Viper SRT-10 for a couple years. Traded it in on a 2010 Raptor and then bought a 2010 GT500 a week later as well. The Viper was a cool car. At the time I had three cars, so the Viper spent most of the time in the garage. I put 7000 miles on it in 2 years so it did get driven (unlike the garage queens that are out there) IMHO, the 2010 GT500 is a way better car (and probably light years away from the GTS you are looking at) 2010 Shelby has AdvanceTrac, ABS, a modern engine (the Viper V10 is a great motor but try getting 800HP out of it for under $20,000, nitrous doesn't count), NAV, a better transmission, easier to find parts, you won't spend 5 figures on the front end if you wreck it, insurance is most likely cheaper. The GT500 is also faster. The Mustang forums are better than the Viper forums by far as well. The 1999 GTS you are looking at has a V10 with forged internals. I don't believe the V10's put in Viper's post 99 were, I know my 2005 did not which surprised me. I got bored with my 2005 SRT10 (which is a better car technically than the 1999 GTS by far) but really love my GT500 (and my 2004 Terminator IMHO was a better car than the Viper too) I'd pass if I was in your shoes, but that's just me. SGT/SC#0471
I do love the "fabricated feel" I get when looking under a viper...go with your gut... Fastest, smoothest, gadgetyist, etc...mean nothing if your in love....
Bill Hamilton
Sounds like you enjoy driving your Shelby (5,000 miles). Would you be putting the same mileage on a Viper? You may miss the creature comforts the Shelby offers. I don’t feel the Viper is as flexible in the everyday world of driving. I am by no means any kind of expert in these areas but to me they don’t seem to hold their value that well. However, you used the word “Love” which throws all common sense out the window. You might want to think of it as that hot little cheerleader you knew in high school that you’ve dreamed about all these years. Now it’s your 25th high school reunion and with the extra 100 pounds, five kids, and three ex- husbands later ….. well, she’s not really the girl of your dream you remembered. l

Evasive
Since you live in WV, assume it won't be a daily driver. Much more raw of a car and you will get a lot of attention (some don't like that). It will not be nearly as refined as what you have now. I'd hold out for the ACR, if you can find one. hawkbarr
I will only offer that I have heard from more than one person that tall people 6' + do not fit well into a Viper, despite the bubble roof. FWIW

I know a lot cars have had that said about them, but in this case it is not one bit hyperbole. They have NO electronic nannies, they get hot int he cabin and the A/C won't overpower it on some days, and they don't have cruise control. They do, however, have an abundance of badass. Viper's are $$$ to work on. Keep that in mind. A decent shop starts at $150/hr. A minor front-end collision starts at around $10-15K and goes up. I thought a lot about a Viper before making my move, and I decided against it because they are a bit more raw than what I wanted, and they cost a LOT when they break or are broken, although the drive-lines are pretty darn tough. If it has always been your dream to own one, do it. I kindof doubt you will keep it long-term if you can only own "one", but you will cherish the experience! I will forever wish I had bought one--and be glad I didn't, at the same time. As odd as that sounds. I will only offer that I have heard from more than one person that tall people 6' + do not fit well into a Viper, despite the bubble roof. FWIW The seats can be lowered, no problem. It's your 25th reunion and she's still whoring around and doing coke in the bathroom at the club and yakking all over seats when you drive her crazy ass home, but she's still a hot freak! Ash1977
I would keep the Shelby. Vipers don't have all the nanny controls that most people are use too. I have here about people buy them and wrecking them in two weeks. Mark
