melissa809
Hey everyone. My 09 GT500 sits outside in the winter. Because of all the snow I didn't get a chance to get to her and start her up. Hence, my stock battery is kaput. I'm reading online about the Optima Yellow Top battery for my car but some people are posting that this battery doesn't fit in the stock tray correctly. Also, I'm assuming because our stock batteries are NOT AGM, that recharging the battery will be fruitless. I have already done an internet search and am more confused than before. All I want is a good battery that can sit in the cold for a couple of weeks at a time AND a battery that also fits my stock battery tray without doing any "rigging" to get the thing to fit. Any input, please????? Thanks in advance melissa

Any input, please????? Thanks in advance melissa I had my stock battery for just under 3 years, then died. I went with the Optima Red Top, which also lasted just under 3 years. I did purchased another Optima Red Top for my stang. I purchased the first Red Top from Costco and they have a 3 year warranty on them. The Yellow Top has only a 18 month warranty. When I returned the first Red Top, Costco gave me 100% of the purchase price and the price just under 3 years was the same price. I now have another 3 year warranty on my Red Top. 2010KonaBlueGT
They can't be recharged? Yes, they can be recharged. Contrary to what I've see published all over the place, so can a AGM (Glass Matt) battery. My suggestion would be to go to any Harley-Davidson dealership and pick up a Battery Tender Jr. They come with a set of aligator type (battery) clips AND a small pigtail harness with two eyelets on the ends of the wires for permanant mounting. Mount the pigtail on your battery terminals (it also has a safety cap to keep it from shorting when not connected to the unit) and when you don't use your car, connect the Batt. Tender up to it and leave it plugged in for the duration of time she's stored for. I have a separate battery tender for all three of my bikes and when I sheetrocked my garage, I put AC outlets on every other stud so I can keep them (and my RC cars) plugged into the wall full time. Do not believe what you read about not being able to use a Batt. Tender on a AGM battery. My Y2K Electra-Glide Classic has a AGM in it and I use a Batt. Tender on it pretty much full time. It's only on it's second battery in over ten years (both were/are OE Harley batteries) so that should give you a good idea of how well they work. My '92 Heritage Softail Classic has a conventional Lead/Acid Interstate battery in it and I have a Batt. Tender connected to it full time too so regardless of what you read, they DO take a float charge (both types). Oh, and FWIW I have a Harbor Freight "Float Charger" connected to my GT500 battery when I store it for the winter here in Co. Springs CO (and it gets COLD). This is the 2nd winter I've had the car and not only is the battery still at tip-top condition, but it is also fully charged every time I need it. Harbor Freight has their float chargers (the SAME thing as a Batt. Tender) on sale right now for something like $4.99 and I've used mine for about 8 years now (on other cars/bikes I owned). In fact, during their last sale I bought four of their float chargers so I can keep all of my cars charged when I travel. I use a power strip so I can plug all of my float chargers into one strip and have it plugged into one AC oullet AND it has a circuit breaker on it....just in case! melissa809
Thanks for the info. But is it true that I can recharge my stock battery back to its full potential? If that's the case, I would just do that. The battery is only 2 years old.

If that's the case, I would just do that. The battery is only 2 years old. My OEM battery gave up after 3.5 years! (I'm not certain, but I think they were only supposed to last two years!) I replaced with the Optima yellow top, and no, it doesn't fit like the original, but it does fit! Actually, it doesn't matter, because one of my next mods will be a battery relocation to the trunk! Oh, by the way, I did put a charger on the old battery - it revived it enough to start the car for a trip to get a new one! Sam

Remove it buy a battery tender & let do the job. Every time you let a battery go dead you take 10% of its life.

Anyways, I guess i am going to go with a new battery. I do NOT like the idea that the Optima Yellow top doesn't fit properly. I don't want to rig my battery tray to make it fit. Can anyone suggest an AGM battery that fits our stock battery trays?????
VNMOUS1
Melissa, all you have to do is put the little feet on it that comes with the Yellow Top. It's narrower than stock so the strap will be a little long. You can pop a new grommet in the end of it to take up the slack. Yellow Tops are deep cycle batteries and won't deteriorate as quickly as your OEM battery. They truly do "die" 10-15% every time it goes flat. They're heavy. 36 pounds. I use it daily and while racing. bj

shel-b001
Melissa To make it simple just by an original Ford battery that will fit & make sure you buy a battery Tender for winter. Ford does have good batteries as i have had them last for 9 years that`s if they are look after.Good Luck.
