wheel dimensions to clear big brakes?

Recommended Posts

I know there a bazillion threads about which particular rims will clear any given big brake kit for our cars, but I'm looking specifically for the dimensions.

I've read several different offsets for 18's, different offsets for 20's+, and even more offsets for front vs. rears.

Personally, I'm looking for an 18x10 (or wider) rim that will clear Brembos up front and tuck a 295-305 series tire under the fender in back.

Which offsets are kosher for this setup? Thanks in advance.

Dimensions of offset and back spacing are not going to tell you if a 10" will fit. Studied dimensions in just trying to get 9" wide for the front to fit GT500 Brembo Fronts. Got real nervous reading American Muscle FR500 description says they do not fit after getting the Wheel Replicas FR5. Luckily they did.

Clearly there is a big difference in how spokes are designed on the hidden side. Details in design there make big difference in strength of the wheel.

Personaly to get a 10" on the front over the Brembo brake may need the lower (20 - 24 mm) offest of the 94-04 Mustang to provide 45 mm clearance you need for the caliper nose. All I could find on the Brembo was 3 dimensions to attempt to make a template to check. If you have access to the wheel of interest, taping the 3" side of a 3x5 card extended 45mm from the ruler edge laid on the wheel mounting surface would be a start (My 10' have less arc in the spoke to clear the brake due to offaet being10 mm larger.)

It is a shame the aftermarket Wheel companies do not provide clearance profiles llke most brake companies so you could overlay templates. Now you have to take a leap and then send them back when they do not fit.

I already have the wheels. I looked for months before I decided on the ones I got and when I finally bought them, I completely forgot to take brakes into consideration. American Muscle tech says big brakes won't fit. the stock SGT calipers are prettly close to the spokes already so I tend to believe him. I did find another old thread where somone posted that Wilwood makes a 6 piston big brake system that will fit under the stock GT wheels. I will get a hold of their tech people on Monday to check. the wheels I bought are the American Muscle Black Bullitt Motorsport wheels. 18X9 F and 18X10 R.

Biggest size from ROUSH and Steeda I've seen are 18x10" with a 45mm offset they can fit up to a 285, I don't thnk you can go bigger without custom rims.

Please let us know if you find a wilwood makes a 6 piston that will fit the stock bullitt wheels without a spacer. I think many people would buy that combo. I like the stock wheels as they remind me of the old Cragar S/S mags from the late 60's.

The FR 500's are one of the 3 styles that American Muscle sells that they say will clear the big brakes. I was traveling all day today and didn't get a chance to call Wilwood. Tomorrow i will have time for sure.

By tomorrow I will have the Wilwood 140-9109-DR and 140-9221-DR here. Hopefully I can get them on next week, son is graduating from HS this weekend and it will be pretty busy.

I wish I had held onto one of my stock wheels until i got these brakes installed and could have compared, I have the GT500's and and 100% confidant they will work, will post photos and if someone shows up with a SGT we can put the wheel on and see.

I know they say that in the wheel specs but check their write up on their Brembo package. I went with the Wheel Replicas FR5 9" Front through Cruzin Concepts and know the fronts fit the Brembo brake. Rear 10" appears to be another thing as Eradispeed +2 template does not. :shift:

Vacation preparations are putting hold on some more investigations. :banghead:

OK, this is where the forums really benefit those of us that haven't made the leap to wider tires and wheels yet from those of you that have.

I know this subject has been well researched and you can provide us with the experience you've gained. I think most of us would like to know what the widest wheel you can fit on the front/rear of the SGT is as well as the widest tire that will fit on those wheels, will clear the big brakes and not rub the inside fenders when cornering.

In the 18" & 20" sizes. THANKS for your help!!!

Okay, the brakes came in and I did not pay attention to the fact that the calipers need Wilwood brakes lines ( different fittings), so those got ordered from Summit today and will not be in for 10 days or so.

They look great by the way.

I spoke to Wilwood's tech today for about 10 min on the phone. He said that their 6R superlite 14" kit will fit most 18" wheels with no problems. If you go on their website there is installation directions for each different kit that includes a fitment template. I am a long way from my car until next weekend most likely but if someone with stock wheels downloads the file, you can check and let us know. I have the 18" black bullitt motorsport wheels from american muscle that I'll have to measure out when I get back to my SGT.
