Brake pads?

Joker45

Recommended Posts

I toasted my front pads at the bash and I'm in need of some suggestions for replacement front pads on my SS. I could go with the stock ones but I would prefer something with alittle more bite and that stands up to road course use alittle better. I don't want to go with a full race pad as I don't believe they work good for normal driving around town as they need alot of heat to start really working. At least that's what I have been told.

What are you using up front on your SS? Links and feedback appreciated.

Hey Robert. I use the Mintex Xtreme pads on the front. Stillen described them as a hybrid street/track pad that is good up to about 1300 degrees. I've run about five track days on them pretty hard and have had no issues whatsoever. Good bite and no fade. I have no experience with a race pad so I don't know the difference, but they definitely held up throughout the day on track better than the stockers. More reliable and consistent throughout the entire track session. Also, I have a ton of pad left despite the multiple track days on them combined with street driving of a few thousand miles, so I'd recommend them. However, I did read somewhere on here a while back where a guy went through these pads in one day ruined his rotors :headscratch: . Don't know how that could happen given my experience with them. About the same amount of brake dust as stock. I believe JLT sells these pads as well. I run the Hawk HPS on the rears and they work well too.

Check out my post on your Griggs thread. Wondering your impressions of the new suspension system?

Hey Robert,

I haven't changed my pads yet but when I do I'll be checking with Alex (Vapor08GT500) to see which he would recommend.

Hope all is well my friend.

Thanks Dan. We were talking about it at the Bash and Alex was actually looking for something better also. I'll have to get ahold of him and see if he found anything.

Hope your doing good also buddy. Take care and I'll talk to you soon.

Thanks for the info. I'll check them out.

I'll try and add some more info in my thread from the bash in the next day or so.

Just talked to Stillen and they have to do some checking for me. They are not sure if the Mintex pads will work as Baer says that they only use the Hawk pads. He's going to get back to me on Monday.

Gotta say that Stillen has some great customer service so far! Very helpful.

Well I haven't had my GT500 on the track yet but I can let you know what I have used on my Cobra with Brembo Gran Turismos. I started with the Hawk HPS which worked very well on the street as they were quiet and gentle on the rotors. They are pretty dusty however, and after some repeated extreme pounding at the track they will begin to fade.

I then switched to the HP Plus which gave excellent initial bite and it was nearly impossible to overheat them. Very noisy though, they howl and groan at low speed and they ate my rotors. Where the HPS turn to dust and sacrifice themselves for the sake of the rotors, the HPS Plus would laugh off the heat to the point where every cross drilled hole cracked.

I put the drilled Baer Eradispeed rotors and ceramic pads on my girlfriend's Cobra and it is a nice combination of low dust and heat dissipation. She likes her chrome wheels to be clean and is not nearly as aggressive with her car. I did unfortunately crack those rotors at the track too, so I now have reinstalled the factory Brembo rotors.

I hope this helps,

James

Joker, I use the Hawk DTC 70's on the front and 60's on the rears on the track. I run the Hawk HPS's on the street(man it's a pain in the butt to change pads between events). The DTC pads are very hard on rotors. The drilled and slotted BAER rotors won't last 3 days with the DTC pads. I know this from experience. The HPS's are good for ther street, but I get a soft pedal with them at the end of every session. The DTC's have great initial bite, good feel and don't fade. It is unfortunate that the BAER design is so labor intensive to change pads. In my 911 that I had previously, I could change pads on all 4 corners in the amount of time it takes me to do 1 on the Mustang. So sometimes I run the DTC's on the street for a while until I get around to changing them. They are loud and make alot of dust, but they work on the street.

Hope this helps you.

Did you check with EBC?

I switched to their Red Stuff for my AP Racing brakes. They work better than the Mintex that came with them.

Almost positive the pads that came on the brakes are not the Mintex Xtremes.

Robert,

Hawk Pads for the WIN! I can get them as a Hawk Dealer. You start going faster with a new suspension and now you need to be able to slow her down! I've tested a lot of brake pads and that's one reason why I and Knownukes use Hawk. I've tested countless brands and these are what work the best. Being able to stop on track, at speed!! Priceless!

Hope you are enjoying the new suspension!

Thank you for everyones feedback! It helps alot.

Which Hawk pads do you recommend for street/track use on the Baer front brakes?

Joker, For the street run the Hawk HPS. Part number HB122F.710. HPS stands for High Performance Street.

Enjoy!!

BJ

btw: Van at Rev Racing is who turned me on to the Hawks and he also has the best price for them. Best supplier in the Shelby world!!

Which Hawk do you run on the track? Do you switch them out with the HPS for street use? I am like dbackg in that I have the Shelby/Baer Extreme's on the front and rear. I think the Extreme's use the same pads on both the front and back?

I ordered my Hawk pads from Van this morning. I'm going with the HPS front and rear right now and he's trying to convince me to get a set of race pads for the track. The race pads are real expensive compaired to street pads. To the tune of 3x the amount of the HPS.

I should have them by Thursday, installed by Friday and I'll let everyone know how I like them.

Thanks again everyone for your input and help.

I run DTC 70's on the front and DTC 60"s on the rear. Yes, they are the same size front and rear. I switch them out when I go more than 3-4 weeks between events. Otherwise it's not worth the effort for me to change,

Thanks BJ et al.

I just spoke with Hawk myself and learned a little more. Regarding the part number you mentioned HB122F.710, the F stands for HPS. Simply replace the F with a U for DTC-70 or G for DTC-60. Both the 60 and 70 have the same specs regarding heat ratings and such, but the 70s have a better grip. The DTC's need to heat up to at least 400 degrees to be more effective so they said they weren't great for autocross (although one site listed them for autocross or track).

I am tossing between getting the HPS or the DTC-30 for normal daily driving. I like the thought of the HPS but it says they don't stop as well as the DTC and they create more dust (I assume this means the DTC-30 would last longer too). Anyone with experience care to make a recommendation?

Also, for the track, I am also tossing between the DTC-60 or DTC-70.

BJ, you mention you use the 60s and 70s. It sounds like that is for normal driving as well? If so, how do they feel for normal driving? Do they last longer? Do they really cause less dust? Do they squeak or make any other noises? Do you keep them on just because it is a pain to keep changing or is there another reason worth mentioning?

Roger or anyone else at SA, will SA sell these Hawk pads? If not, I'll reach out to Rev Racing.

BJ, I tried to email you this but it didn't work so...

You mentioned Rev Racing. Can you tell me the number or website? There are a lot and I couldn't tell which one.

The best price I've seen so far on the HPS brakes is $116 so I want to see if Rev is better.

Thanks

Adam
