Tire pressure sensors...how too?

Will try to make this as short as possible, in my head its a book.

Okay, have a 2007 Shelby, Have bought 4 new rims (from a co recommended by a board member), Have bought (as kindly recommended here) the swap over bands to re-use my own sensors. I am going to have the tyres removed from the stock wheels and then take off the sensors from the stock wheels and then put them on the new rims (same size as old ones) and put them on the car, Easy so far.

Okay, the problem, I have removed the rear pair of stock wheels to track the car with other wheels/tyres on. Now I don't know which wheel is for which side (the originals) in the rear. Not really dying to put them on to find out with the weather so crap.

How sensitive are the sensors? Can I put the original wheels and tyres next to the ones currently bolted on the car and start the car and see if the sensor light comes on in the dash? or does it take driving the car or actually having them bolted on the car when driving for them to work/signal the dash light?

The reason I ask is that I live in the UK and live in a rural setting and the car is very clean, if I take it on the road it will need a 2 hour wash before I can put it back for the winter. Any advice welcome.

Just trying to get the right sensor on the right corner as I am informed that if you swap them side for side they will act as if the tyre is flat and throw the light on in the dash.

thx. Peter

Not sure on an '07 but on my '11 it doesn't tell you which tire. You get the low pressure light and then it's up to you to figure out which one it is. I had a slow leaking tire on my car when new. It would lose about a pound a day. At 25 psi the "low pressure" light would illuminate. After the first time, I checked all four tires to find the one low, and that's the one I kept checking afterward for a few weeks It would take nearly two weeks to leak down to 25 psi. Finally I took it back to the dealership and they found a tiny air leak around one rim. They cleaned and re-seated the tire and no problems since.

My wife drives a 2006 GM SUV and it will tell you which tire. I found out the hard way after I rotated the tires the first time. :banghead:

Thanks for that, On the 2011 Stangs the Tire Sensors are on the Valve stem itself, On the 07 it is a little unit on a strap that goes around the center of the rim. You can just change stems (I would assume) I have to cut off the non removable one put on by ford and use a re-usable one bought from the aftermarket and swap over the sensor itself. I have been told they are corner sensitive so if put the sensor for the Right rear on the Left rear the tyre light on the dash will come on.

I don't have easy access to the programmer out here or this would not be a worry.

thanks. peter

I have a 2008 GT500 & I bought a set of Super Snake wheels. Instead of reusing my stock sensors, I ordered a kit from American Muscle that included 4 sensors, 4 bands & the tool to sync the sensors. The kit also included an instructional DVD on how to sync them. The install was easy and American Muscle was a great company to deal with.

While I don't know this for a fact - I don't think it matters. Last summer I took off all four wheels, removed the tires and took the wheels to have them powdercoated. Then the place that was going to do it chickened out on me :censored: and I had to put everything back together. The odds that I got every wheel back in its original position I would guess are slim to none, but there were no problems.

Sorted, it was sunny out today so I took her for a drive, pulled off the track rears and put on the stockers, got lucky and got them right first time,

thanks, Peter

You may have got them right but i don`t think it matters which side it goes on but you can buy the TPMS-19 transmitter for $5.00

Thats great to hear, I had though when I was buying my bands the site mentioned that they had to go in the same spot or if you rotate tyres for better wear they had to be changed so best to buy the programmer. I'm not lucky enough even with 2 tyres to put them on the correct corner once off and moved about.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay did 2 of my wheels this weekend, could not fit four in the car with the tyres. Removed the old tyres. The Sensors sit in a cradle on the factory rim, you remove a small brown space filling clip by pinching it with a narrow screw driver, this gives room for the sensor to come out. You lightly pull on the end of the cradle and it releases the sender. I made sure I put the new strap and replacement cradle the right way around on my new wheels and tightened them up (a power drill with a flat bit is recommended as the straps are VERY long to fit larger wheels and it takes yonks to do it by hand, I cleaned a small area of the inside of the wheel with the included alcohol wipe and stuck the cradle in place and tightened the strap. The old sensor snapped in (on cradle needed to be pinched a bit for a nice tight fit and then re-used the brown space filler and it fit like OEM, had the tyres put on and balanced and thats it.

cheers. Peter
