December 7th, 1941 - "A date that will live in infamy"

Recommended Posts

On this, the 69th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, I want to salute our military, past and present, for defending the USA and guarding our freedom from those who are, or would be our enemy.:salute:

If you haven't seen this before, here is FDR's historic speech on 12/8/1941 before a joint session of Congress.

Although many service members lost their lives on that fateful day, the most notable are probably the 1,177 men killed on the USS Arizona. http://en.wikipedia....rizona_Memorial

Some of you may have seen this wall below located at one end of the memorial situated abreast the USS Arizona which records the names of those shipmates killed in action. It is something I will never forget.

My grandfather was in the Navy and stationed in Pearl Harbor during the 40's. Retired Fleet Reserve. My mother was born in Hawaii too. I grew up attending many memorial and patriotic events. Tons of gratitude and respect for their service. :salute:

A few pictures from the lunch today:

My son and his great-grandfather (my grandfather)

This was our table - 18 people.

Many tables were only the survivor and their wife. A few had a friend or relative, but most were alone.

Laura and I were able to visit the Memorial just 2 weeks after the 9-11 bombing. It was a very, very somber experience, especially considering what had just happened in New York.

Definitely something everyone should see.

Sportscars (Sean) tell your grandfather thanks for his service. :salute:

What a lucky man you are Sean, to still have your grampa here. Tell him thank you and that he is most appreciated for his job well done in serving our nation.

My father was a young Marine and the company bugler, who had just performed Sunday Colors ( Flag Raising ) on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the bombing started. We have a Newspaper article from 1941 telling how he blew " First Call to Arms" to alert the Marines in the barracks. He went on to serve throughout the Pacific. As with all his fellow Marines he never spoke of the hardships they faced. He is gone now as are most of the Vets of WWII. I am very proud of him and all who have served and are now in harms way. All I can say is thank you . :salute:
