Super Snake hood owners...

Hi

I am finally ready to move on a hood upgrade for my 2008 GT500. I really like the Super Snake style with the KR style in close 2nd. I've considered the Venom hoods but unfortunately, they apparently don't work with the FRPP CAI that I have installed. I guess they don't close with that CAI installed. I've tried to do research on the SS hood here and elsewhere on the net... I understand that the SS hood has undergone revisions and there have been issues along the way. I guess what I'm hoping for is some current insight and any info on the latest revision.

Current SS hood owners, how is the hood holding up? What issues did you encounter?

Anyone know what the latest revision of the SS hood is and how its improved?

Is the FRPP CAI an issue for the SS hood? Has anyone had the FRPP CAI and went ahead with a Venom hood and modified it to work?

I like the grill in the scoops of the Venom II hood....has anyone added that to the SS hood successfully?

How much should I expect to pay for the hood to be prepped and painted? Anyone know someone in the Milwaukee WI or Chicago IL area that does good work?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I recently mounted the new generation SS hood on my car. One thing I was disappointed about is that there is no more functional ram air built into the hood. I will probably open up the area in the scoop to let some air into the engine compartment before I paint the hood. Other than that the quality of the new hoods seem to be considerably better than the older ones. The fit was also very good, could be described as bolt on with the exception of having to shim the rear hood mounts to get the hood flush with the fenders at the windshield end. And the vents Shelby sells for the hood are really very nice and well built. My body guy even thought it was a nice hood. I have to give Shelby credit for trying to make much better parts than the ones that were previously sold thru Scott Drake. Everything I have received lately has been first class quality wise. A big thumbs up to the folks at Shelby.

I have the last generation hood with ram air. The fit and finish is excellent, inside and outside. I have the 2.8 Kenne Bell blower. Whenever I do donuts or drive really fast, like 140+ mph, the blower will "touch" the hood. Leaving a dime size scratch in the hood. I seem to be the only one having this problem. I am still working on figuring out if it is a hood problem or a problem elsewhere in the car. I also have the new SS hood, the same that Nitro has. Bids to paint the hood were around $2000. I never put the new hood on yet. I'm not happy with the finish on the inside of the new hood. Its like unfinished fiberglass and is soposed to be painted black. So I'm trying to make the old hood work with chassis stiffening. The ram air hoods have better functionality when cold air is allowed in. I wouldn't recommend the grill scoops. The SS hoods look awesome and work good. Good luck.

The one I received is finished and primed both inside and outside. Very nicely finished on the inside, just like the outside.

I had the scratching issue on my second SS hood. It happened at hard WOT and high track speeds. SA replaced it around 18 months ago and I've had no issues since.

Hi guys

Thanks for the responses. Wow...no functional ram air on the new hood? Thats disappointing. If you cut out the hood bottom by the CAI box, does that effectivly make it functioning? I had read somewhere that some hoods with ram air were causing the engine to stall when idling and they needed a modification from SA to stop that. Would that happen with the hood cut for ram air?

Holy crap...$2000 to paint the hood? Yikes.

Has anyone seen these:

Are these manufactured by SA? Has anyone bought one? Why do they have a pic of the KR on the SS hood with ram air? Should I assume these are older generation hoods if available with ram air? I sent NAT an email with similar questions but got no response :-(

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

If you check a few threads down the page to the one cheftjpeck posted about his new hood, you will see that he got his hood painted and striped for $600. The $2000 quote mentioned above seems a little high unless a lot of prep work is required. There have been posts where members paid $2-$3000 to have their hood painted but they always mentioned that a ton of prep work was required to actually make the hood usable.

  • 5 months later...

So the SS hoods are back in stock! Has anyone bought one of this latest revision? Any comments on it?

For those who have drilled holes in the newer revisions for ram air...what drilling did you do and were there issues in doing so?

Has anyone drilled holes in the hood for the windshield wiper spray nozzles instead of relocating them?

Will hood pin kits other than those for sale at SPP work with an SS hood? I'd like an option for black ones...

Thanks!!

just got one of the new hoods(finally!) and it is darn near a bolt on except as mentioned above about shimming the hinges to raise the hood up a little. Overall finish is also very good. Bodyman says it is one of the best he has seen. Only thing I would have liked is if it could be made to have functional ram air as there are no ducts or provisions for it at all, they must have had good reason not to do it. as for washer nozzles I used the supersnake relocating kit and got a set of the supersnake hood pins for it. all I need is the vents to come back in stock. I really like this hood-good work guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
