Extended Warranty

I generally never buy these for any product I own, as I feel they are a waste of money but I pulled the trigger yesterday for my Shelby. I don't want to take a chance of a excessively high repair bill after the bumper to bumper warranty runs out. Since I don't plan on modding my Shelby or driving more than 3,000 miles a year I just extended the duration of the factory warranty to the Premium Care 7 year/36,000 mile/$50.00 deductible for $700.00. That price was only $50.00 over the dealers cost. I called just about every dealer in the area and went with the one that gave me the best price. I think this is one time that I will feel that it wasn't a waste of money, but only time will tell.

I bought the extended warranty.

It has always paid for itself in the past, I kinda hope it doesn't have to pay for itself this time.

With 500HP when something goes it's going to go BIG!

I just sent my dealer a e-mail asking if I could get the 700 dollar plan noted in the first post. I will also check with Five - Oh - B.

Lutzcat,

Are you suggesting that I take a poll here of other members that might want to all go in as a group to get a big discount ?

I did not know Ford did that !

With 500HP, if something goes BIG, you were racing and they will deny the claim. You really should spend some time over at the Lightning forums and see what those guys have gone through. There are exceptions early on but Ford has gotten MUCH more difficult in dealing with large claims.

I plan to keep my money in my investment account and let a great independant shop deal with any difficulties after the warranty expires. Much less hassel and no fighting that way.

You already have 5 years 60,000 on the powertrain from Ford. This 7year 36k plan does not offer much more coverage above the standard warranty for the cost.

I don't know if they would, but if we had 30 plus members that was willing to shell out that kind of dough ( 30 x 700 = 21k ) it wouldn't hurt to try. A 20% discount would sure pull me in and others I bet.

With the drivetrain, yes. But many times the issues are with electric window motors, air conditioning issues, and other things. It may pay off in other areas. So far my dealer is wanting to charge me "FULL" price for the warranty...I'm still negotiating to see if I can get them down near cost.

It comes with a 5year powertrain warranty which is included in the price of the vehicle. So how I see it, You paid 700 for a two year warranty. Which IMHO is'nt all that great.

I WONT get suckered into an extended ever again. I'll get one when the factory warranty expires.

I'm kinda with you on this, but the powertrain warranty only covers the powertrain and does not cover emission equipment, electrical/electronics, air conditioning, suspension components and my biggest fear the S/C going south. The list of covered items is fairly extensive and most of these items would not be covered by the 5/60,000 PT warranty only the 3/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. So in reality I basically extended the BTB warranty from 3 to 7 years. The mileage was not even a concern because I know I will not have any where near 36,000 miles on mine by the time it's 7 years old. Like I said in my first post I won't be driving my car all that much. I didn't buy it as a every day commuter vehicle but strickly as pleasure vehicle that I will really only drive on the weekends when the weather allows. I think letting them sit can cause just as much trouble as driving them everyday.

That's your opinion and you're certainly welcome to it. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here. There are many things that can go wrong that are not powertrain related, so you are getting more than a 2 year warranty on those items. I do know that one power window motor or an air conditioning evaporator can just about pay for the cost.

What I've often done in the past is take the money they wanted (let's say $1,000 in this case), put it in the stock market with my other investments, and let it compound. After 3-5 years, when the base warranty runs out, I have about $1,300 to spend on warranty. That way, if you don't need it....you can keep it!

My issue is that for how little I drive it, I can't see much going wrong. I only will put about 2,000 miles a year on this car...so even a 7 year warranty will only get me to 14,000 miles.
