EXVp
I would like to know if an upgraded external paint finish spec has been incorporated into production that is different than that of the current Mustang and GT lines? I would hope that for a $40,000+ automobile that it was thought of. TIA
Five Oh B
Call me naive', but the AAI plant has been doing much better paint work than Dearborn did on Mustangs. I can tell you, though, that previous Cobras and Mach 1's had fully painted door jambs and underhood surfaces with good shine, unlike lesser V6's and GT's which typically got very thin, rough paint in the engine compartment and trunk areas. I suspect the GT500's will be painted much better - in and out - as well. Here's a couple shots under the hood of my Mach 1 so you can see how well painted it is from the factory.... Thank you Mr. Five Oh. That is indeed a very clean look in the pictures. My concern is in factory 'orange peel' effect which can be picked out fairly easy if you view a finish just the right way and know what your looking for. I see that it's very common actually in many automobiles. I like to use Mecedes and Porsche as finish benchmarks even though they are a completely different class of auto. But their finish is undeniably good. Im actually abit sommer at the moment due to a visit this evening to Texan Ford where they were proudly announcing their sales price of the new Shelby Cobra Mustang as $70,000 for the coupe and $75,000 for the convertable. Im certain they with probably sell one at that price, a number of dealers will manage to do this and that's great for them. In my humble opinion a mass produced car such as this one, even at 7-8000 units for 2 maybe a 3 year production run won't support pricing like this in mass. I feel this will be short lived in making sales in this pricing range. But if there's a few, their worth getting to a dealer, even if short lived. When I was at the dealer, the sales manager was talking to a fellow in his late thirties I'd say, and was listening the lines the manager was giving to this guy who was very interested in getting one of these cars, assuming at the price the dealer was asking. I listened long enough to suddenly realize that this fellow knew what the Shelby name represented, BUT, he actually thought and was being told he would be buying a real Shelby. I waited for a break, and quickly stepped over to this fellow and asked him to consider slowing down your excitement and said to him 'forgive me for interrupting but you are in fact mistaken in believing your buying a real Shelby' I told him real Shelby's have their own unique manufacturers plate afixed to the automobile issued from Shelby American. He didn't know this. I told him what your really looking at is simply the next generation Cobra Mustang with the name Shelby attached next to it, some collaboration with Carroll and cleaver marketing by Ford doing the rest. The MSRP when it's released is what Ford believes it's worth...and so should you. I think he understood but what happened from there I don't know as I told him I wanted one too but was going to hunt and wait. Then I left. Five Oh B
Ah, the dreaded orange peel. Yep, seen a lot of that over the years on Mustangs. The 2005+ don't seem to have it nearly as often, but I bet it's out there in small quantities. As noted above, the Mustang (even the GT500) is a mass-produced car so they will not be perfect or built to the same exacting standards as high-end cars on the market, but you'll get your money's worth. Going into this car expecting perfection will leave many of you disappointed. Be realistic and expect some mass-production blemishes and you'll love your new toy! I agree with Five Oh B that asking for a perfect car is Rare when massed produced, but this a SHELBY GT500. Remember this car will run down the same production line mixed in with the regular model mustangs as they are built. The only difference is that the parts that will be used on the Shelby GT500 ARE different then those used on other regular mustangs and these Shelby parts will NOT be massed produced & will have to go thru what is called a "Safe Product Launch" (normally the 1st 5000 parts) meaning each part will be 100% inspected by Quality Engineers to ensure the process is correct, the assembly was right & nothing but quality goes out the door to the customer . We do this on every new & specialty parts we make & I see no reason for them NOT to do this on a car that is Limited in production to 7k to 8k. ( I should know. I just made some sample parts for the 2008 Ford 500 & they are adding the following options to the car....Blue tooth Capability, Heated front & rear seats, an additional power point for the rear passengers & a MP3 plug-in ) so they say but thats subject to change as always. Don't worry you will fall in LOVE at 1st site & it won't matter after that!

Would be nice to know if Ford tryed to spec something a notch up. They are proud of their Shelby too. Thanks! :-)

archiea
Look how well it is painted from the factory and that for 37 yrs old. well, wasn't that back when it was ok to use lead in the paint process? isn;t that why we have this orange peel problem, because the base of the paint is different.. I think water.. Blame those tree huggers, damn it! ;P Hey my T-bird has some orange peeling, and thats a 40+K car. What can be done? If you get it in this color, I;m sure you will be Ok with the orange peel problem...
ColdwaterHotrod
The mirrors can be molded with different colorant (other than black) to get them to look real close to the base paint color. We have the technology, the plastic & the colorants available, they just need to spend a few extra dollars to do it right. If you get it in this color, I;m sure you will be Ok with the orange peel problem... Depends on how brave you are. I spent about four months working in an upscale Muscle Car dealership and I picked the brains of anyone who worked there. Here's what I got from them. I had some orange peel on the lower rear bumper of my Bullitt. I started with 1000 grit wet sandpaper, then switched to 1500 wet. I kept the pressure light as the clearcoat is not that thick on Mustangs or any production car for that matter. Then I got my Porter Cable polisher at low to medium speed first with a Norton fine polish, then the Ultra fine with the occasional misting of water on the polished areas so as not to "burn through" the Paint. The result..... it looks like glass. If I had the nerve I would do the whole car, but...I'm not that brave....yet.
KingCobra
Sounds good where did you learn to do that??? Also sounds too dangerous for me to try that. If I asked the dealership to hand wax it before I picked it up for the drive home, do you think they would do it??? KingCobra.

RUFDRAFT
Or - do a search on Zaino - easy on and easy off - and some of the best use it. My 350Z has about ten coats and looks very deep. I hadn't thought about the mirrors. Maybe I'll call a good bodyshop tomorrow and see what that would cost. My Z has the mirrors painted. Looks good. JETSOLVER
The only problem I am going to have is cleaning the chunks of rubber off the rear fenders behind the tires! KingCobra
An experienced private detailer can wet sand and polish a whole car without removing too much clearcoat and make the car look like glass. Unfortunately they are hard to come by. As far as waxing, if you want the best and longest lasting/ low maintainence shine try this : when you first get the car wash the car completely with a car shampoo such as meguires ( lots of suds, very clean sponge, very light rubbing, lots of water to rinse). Completely dry car (use a microfiber towel if available as this minimizes scratches) The idea is not to produce any fine scratches. Then coat the car finish with a polish such as Klasse polish (this is a synthetic polish that last about a year, it is very high quality and won't stain rubber or platic parts, apply with microfiber cloth if available.). Final step is applying wax, such as Pinnacle Sovereign this is a very high quality/ long lasting /very expensive wax. It is expensive because it is an almost pure white carnuaba wax, it is very easy to apply and won't stain plastics or rubber (apply with microfiber cloth). This wax is VERY HIGHLY recommended for red paint or dark paint and is fine for any color car. These products also work fine on the vinyl stripeing. This wax is rated at 6-9 months between reapplying which is the highest rating. These instructions are of course if you REALLY love your car. I think at the price I am paying for this car, and It's just for fun use, I will be keeping it up like this. Also I am telling the dealer not to put their cheap hard wax on my car because it can actually scratch the finish and depending on type of wax can make it duller. The first time you do this may take some time but afterwards it will be easy to clean and quickwax after that. This is all just my opinion and others may not think their car is worth the trouble, but all my cars still look brand new even after 4-5 years. The only problem I am going to have is cleaning the chunks of rubber off the rear fenders behind the tires! Holy crap!!! Thanks for the time it took to type that out. I appreciate the time and the advice. Trust me, the time rquired to do as you suggested wouldn't faze me at all. KingCobra.
